Two people were killed and four others critically injured Thursday by an explosion at a Mojave Desert airport site used by the pioneering aerospace company that sent the first private manned rocket into space, authorities said.

Wreckage of equipment and vehicles could be seen in views broadcast by a TV news helicopters over the Mojave Air and Space Port in the high desert north of Los Angeles near Edwards Air Force Base.

The blast occurred at a facility belonging to Scaled Composites LLC, caused two fatalities and at least four critical injuries, and left some toxic material, said Kern County fire Capt. Doug Johnston.

The accident involved nitrous oxide but it was not known if an actual rocket motor test was under way or whether it occurred during preparation for a test, fire Inspector Tony Diffenbaugh told KABC-TV.

The blast at a Mojave Air and Space Port facility belonging to Scaled Composites LLC released nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, into the air. Haz-Mat teams were on the scene as a precaution and fire authorities said the scene was safe. All the victims worked for Scaled, the Mojave-based builder of SpaceShipOne, the first private manned rocket to reach space.

Aerospace designer Burt Rutan, who heads Scaled but was away, rushed back to Mojave. He appeared emotional, hugging the airport manager and fire chief. His voice trailed off at times as he spoke to reporters. No information about the victims was released because families were being notified.


Rutan said the blast did not involve a rocket firing but happened during a test of the flow of nitrous oxide through an injector in the course of testing components for a new rocket motor for the upcoming SpaceShipTwo.


The nitrous oxide was at room temperature and under pressure, Rutan said.

'We don't know why it exploded'
Rutan gave little additional information about the test, but said it had been done safely many times during the SpaceShipOne program and had been done once before for the SpaceShipTwo program.

"We were doing a test we believe was safe. We don't know why it exploded. We just don't know," he said.

SpaceShipTwo is to be used for the new space tourism business Virgin Galactic belonging to Richard Branson. The company plans to offer $200,000 rides into space for tourists.

Scaled's offices and aircraft construction facilities were closed late Thursday. Authorities did not allow access to the blast site in a remote unpaved area about a quarter-mile beyond an airplane storage area.

Video news helicopters showed wrecked equipment and vehicles at the airport in the high desert north of Los Angeles near Edwards Air Force Base.

Так что же там было, BLEVE или blow? Судя по фотке, я склоняюсь к второй версии, ибо цистерну на куски не порвало, только завалило на бок, а вот тележка для оборудования без колес осталась и вся обгорела.

MOJAVE, Calif -- The three men that died in Thursday's Mojave airport explosion have been identified.

38 year old Eric Blackwell of Randsburg, 45 year old Charles May of Mojave, and 33 year old Todd Ivens of Tehachapi died because of the blast.

Blackwell and May both died at the scene of the accident.
Ivens died four hours after the explosion after being airlifted to Kern Medical Center.
All three men worked for Scaled Composities.

Vitaliy Gisin Talks About Brother Who Works For Scaled Composites

Vitaliy Gisin has spoken out about his younger injured brother, Scaled Composites employee Eugene Gisin.

Although Vitaliy Gisin couldn't speculate as to what happened in the Mojave explosion to injure his Russian-born brother, he said, "For his condition he is doing quite well."

Eugene Gisin, eight years younger than Vitaliy Gisin, was one of three people injured at an explosion at Mojave Airport Thursday.

Three others were killed in the blast when two tanks of nitrous oxide exploded around 2:40 p.m. at a Scaled Composites rocket testing facility on the Mojave Airport premises.

Scaled Composites employees Eric Blackwell, 38, of Randsburg and Charles May, 45, of Mojave were killed instantly. A third person, Todd Ivens, 33, of Tehachapi, died at Kern Medical Center late Thursday evening.

According to Vitaliy, Eugene is the roommate of one of the other blast victims.

He also noted that his brother just graduated with a master's degree from Cal Poly in aeronautics. "He was pursuing the dream of his life to work for an aerospace company."

He also claims his brother understood the risks of working in the aeronautics industry.

Gisin, clearly shaken about his brother's condition, had one positive comment to make about Thursday's explosion.

"I'm glad this happened in America," he said. "If this would have happened in Russia, most likely he wouldn't have received this level of care."

Both vehicles are well progressed but you will have to wait for the surprises. We have never confirmed a definitive schedule but are still hopeful of achieving our 2008/9 testing.

Virgin Galactic sets out Year of the Spaceship

Virgin Galactic expects its White Knight II (WK2) aircraft's last engine to be delivered in January and the SpaceShipTwo (SS2) carrier fully assembled by June for a July test flight in 2008, which it is calling the "year of the spaceship".

The timetable for Virgin Galactic in 2008 was outlined by its president Will Whitehorn at the 3rd Rutherford Appleton Laboratory space conference in Oxfordshire, UK on 6 December.

On 23 January the designs for the carrier aircraft and its spaceship will be unveiled and by March the SS2's simulator will be completed while construction of the first WK2 and SS2 so far is 60% and 50% complete, respectively.

"White Knight II will look more like the Virgin Atlantic Globalflyer. We have built all the models to show the public [the finished design in January]," says Whitehorn, adding that he wants to offer $3 million launches to low Earth Orbit for small satellites.

This launch service could use WK2 or a larger successor in the 2015 timeframe, which Whitehorn referred to as White Knight Three, using in either case a two-stage rocket that would place the payloads into orbits.

Meanwhile, Virgin Galactic is aiming to sign a commercial agreement this month for use of New Mexico's planned Spaceport America and a flight handling assessment of that spaceport will begin by January.

The company now has $30 million in fully paid tickets and deposits and 100 of its around 200 "signed customers" have experienced the SS2 flight profile in a centrifuge.
