Six months after sending one of its communications satellites to orbit on the first re-flight of a SpaceX rocket, SES intends to launch a hybrid television broadcasting satellite owned in partnership with EchoStar on another previously-used Falcon 9 rocket from Florida's Space Coast as soon as late September, industry officials told Spaceflight Now.

The launch of the SES 11 spacecraft, also named EchoStar 105, will be the third time SpaceX has sent a customer's satellite into orbit with the help of a reused rocket stage. Industry officials said SES, EchoStar and SpaceX agreed in recent weeks to shift the satellite from an all-new rocket to one with a previously-flown first stage.

The SES 11/EchoStar 105 satellite will likely ride a Falcon 9 first stage that first flew Feb. 19 with a Dragon supply ship heading for the International Space Station, one source said, but a firm assignment has not been confirmed. That vehicle returned to a vertical touchdown at Landing Zone 1 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station

Liftoff from a Florida launch pad is scheduled no sooner than around Sept. 27, a couple of days after a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket is set to haul a classified payload into orbit for the National Reconnaissance Office, the U.S. government's spy satellite agency. The Atlas 5 flight with a U.S. national security mission is already booked on the Air Force's Eastern Range for Sept. 25, and will receive priority to launch first if it remains on schedule.

SES and EchoStar announced their agreement to develop the SES 11/EchoStar 105 satellite in September 2014. The companies then said the launch was expected by the end of 2016.

EchoStar Satellite Services will employ 24 Ku-band transponders aboard the satellite to replace digital network capacity the Colorado-based company currently leases on the AMC 15 satellite owned by SES. For its half of the new satellite, SES intends to operate the craft's C-band transponders for video and data distribution services.

Airbus Defense and Space built the satellite, which will be shipped to Cape Canaveral in the coming weeks from its final assembly plant in Toulouse, France.

SpaceX has not said which launch pad it will use for the the SES 11/EchoStar 105 mission.

The company's Falcon 9 launches from Florida so far this year have lifted off at pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, but SpaceX plans to move its Falcon 9 base to nearby pad 40 later this year once crews complete repairs and reactivate the complex after a rocket explosion last year. SpaceX officials have not set a firm timetable for the move to pad 40, which will free up pad 39A for final preparations to launch the first Falcon Heavy rocket, a demonstration flight set for November.

The SES 11/EchoStar 105 satellite will weigh approximately 11,900 pounds (5,400 kilograms) at launch. A payload of that mass means SpaceX will likely try to land the Falcon 9's first stage on a platform downrange from Cape Canaveral in the Atlantic Ocean.

Спойлер
SpaceX has launched two missions with re-flown first stage boosters — both successful.

The SES 10 satellite rode the first reused Falcon 9 rocket March 30 from Kennedy Space Center, and the BulgariaSat 1 communications satellite was the passenger for the second Falcon 9 booster re-flight June 23.

SpaceX says reusing pieces of its Falcon 9 rockets reduces launch costs, and engineers aim to reduce the time needed between flights of the same booster from months to days, and perhaps as little as 24 hours, an aspiration espoused by Elon Musk, the company's chief executive.

The SES 11/EchoStar 105 mission is third in line on SpaceX's Florida launch schedule, following the Aug. 13 liftoff of a space station resupply flight and the Sept. 7 launch of the Air Force's X-37B spaceplane, a reusable robotic vehicle used to conduct secret experiments in orbit. The Falcon 9s on both launches will be all-new.

Спойлер
Meanwhile, a SpaceX team at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California is preparing for an Aug. 24 Falcon 9 launch with the Taiwanese Formosat 5 Earth observation satellite and a Sept. 30 liftoff with the third set of 10 next-generation Iridium voice and data replay spacecraft.

SES currently has two more satellites booked to launch on SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets after SES 11/EchoStar 105.

Martin Halliwell, chief technology officer at SES, said earlier this year that those two spacecraft — SES 14 and SES 16, the latter of which was developed in partnership with the government of Luxembourg — could also fly on previously-launched Falcon 9 boosters. Halliwell said then that SES 11/EchoStar 105 would likely fly on a new Falcon 9, but those plans changed.

SES 16, also named GovSat 1, could launch in the fourth quarter of this year, SES said in a quarterly earnings presentation last week. SES 14's launch has been delayed to early 2018 due to SpaceX's jam-packed manifest, which Musk said last month includes up to a dozen more missions this year.

Another SES satellite, SES 14, is assigned to launch on a European Ariane 5 rocket from French Guiana in early 2018.

WASHINGTON — SpaceX intends to launch EchoStar-105/SES-11 on a partially reused Falcon 9 rocket no earlier than October, the company said Aug. 31.
Спойлер
The mission will be SpaceX's third launch to use a previously flown Falcon 9 booster. The first was the March launch of SES-10 followed by the June launch of BulgariaSat-1.

Luxembourg-based SES and EchoStar of Englewood, Colorado, ordered the satellite from Airbus Defence and Space in August 2014 as a replacement for AMC-15, which is now 13 years old. EchoStar will lease the Ku-band payload on SES-11, rebranding it as EchoStar-105.

Both satellite operators originally anticipated the spacecraft launching in late 2016, but SpaceX's September 2016 Falcon 9 explosion set the mission back about a year.

EchoStar-105/SES-11 will cover the Americas, including Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean, from the 105 degrees west orbital location. Once in orbit, EchoStar will lease the full Ku-band payload for a minimum of 10 years, with the option afterwards to renew on an annual basis. SES will operate the C- and Ka-band payloads, with the C-band payload replacing capacity from AMC-18.

SpaceX is conducting the mission from the Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39A on the Florida coast.

In March, SES's Chief Technology Officer Martin Halliwell said the operator might use up to three pre-flown Falcon 9 boosters this year in an effort to normalize reusable rockets. Meeting that number would require a pre-flown booster for GovSat-1, a joint venture satellite with the government of Luxembourg, which is SES's last satellite scheduled to launch this year.

EchoStar 105/SES-11, a high-powered hybrid Ku and C-band communications satellite, is a dual-mission satellite for US-based operator EchoStar and Luxembourg-based operator SES. EchoStar 105/SES-11 provides EchoStar with 24 Ku-band transponders of 36 MHz, marketed as EchoStar 105, while it provides SES with a C-band payload of 24 transponders, marketed under the name SES-11. EchoStar 105/SES-11 replaces Ku-band capacity for AMC-15 and C-band capacity for AMC-18 at SES' well-established 105 degrees West orbital slot.

EchoStar 105 was tailored to meet the Ku-band capacity needs of EchoStar's enterprise, media and broadcast, and U.S. government service provider customers, offering coverage of the 50 U.S. states and expanded reach to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.

SES-11, designed to accelerate the development of SES's U.S. prime video neighborhood and optimized for digital television delivery, joins SES-1 and SES-3 at the centre of SES's robust North American orbital arc, which reaches more than a hundred million TV homes. It also replaces C-band capacity for AMC-18, which SES offers over North America, including Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean, empowering businesses and governments to capture new opportunities and expand their reach.

EchoStar 105/SES-11 is the 47th satellite based on Airbus's highly reliable Eurostar E3000 platform. It will have a launch mass of 5,200 kg and spacecraft power of 12 kW.

SpaceX is deep into pre-launch preparations for two upcoming missions that are set to lift off within a couple of days of each other. Both target launch dates have moved to the right by a matter of days, with the SES-11 mission from KSC's 39A now tracking an October 7 departure, while on the West Coast the Iridium NEXT-3 mission now has a launch placeholder of October 9.
Спойлер
Launch Date Realignment:

While both pre-launch flows are deemed to be issue-free, changes to the launch date targets are not unusual, especially for the busy Eastern Range (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2017/08/eastern-range-return-two-key-launches-stand-down/).

Notably, it was the SES-11 mission that moved to the right by a few days.

The satellite, also called EchoStar 105, is a spacecraft with 24 Ku-band and 24 C-band transponders that will be used to support the continued development of the U.S. orbital arc media distribution neighborhood and provide coverage over North America, including Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean.

It will ride atop SpaceX's B-1031.2 booster – conducting its second flight after successfully lofting the CRS-10 Dragon to the International Space Station (ISS) earlier this year (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2017/02/spacex-historic-debut-launch-39a-crs-10-dragon/) – a launch that was the maiden SpaceX launch from 39A since its transformation from its Space Shuttle era (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/tag/39A/).

The launch date was previously tracking a flow that would have involved a Static Fire test on September 29 ahead of an October 2 launch.

That timeline has since moved to an October 2 placeholder for the Static Fire test, ahead of an October 7 launch date. No specific reason has been given for the change to the schedule.

An Atlas V (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/tag/Atlas-V/), however, is also vying for the Eastern Range's attention in the first part of October, with another high-priority NRO mission (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/tag/NROL/). The NROL-52 mission is currently evaluating an October 5 launch date, although ULA has yet to confirm a set target due to the classified nature of the payload.

...

SpaceX does have separate launch teams for both its East and West coast operations, but can opt to protect its manifest running order with such realignments, as appears to have been the case with these two upcoming missions.

SpaceX engineers are readying two Falcon 9 rockets for launches Oct. 7 and Oct. 9 from Florida and California, setting up another quick turnaround to first deploy a large TV broadcasting satellite for SES and EchoStar over the United States with a previously-flown booster, then add 10 more spacecraft to Iridium's fleet of new-generation voice and data relay network.

First up is the Oct. 7 launch of an Airbus-built communications satellite from pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for SES and EchoStar. The approximately 11,500-pound (5,200-kilogram) spacecraft will blast off aboard a reused Falcon 9 first stage during a two-hour launch window opening at 6:53 p.m. EDT (2253 GMT).

The launch was previously set for Oct. 2 but was pushed back to allow more time to complete preparations on the satellite in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

The portion of the satellite owned by SES, known as SES 11, will support digital video and television services over North America, replacing C-band communications capacity currently provided the AMC 18 satellite launched in 2006. SES says the new satellite's 24 C-band transponders will relay radio, television and video signals across the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, Canada, Mexico and the the Caribbean.

EchoStar's part of the satellite, which it calls EchoStar 105, includes 24 Ku-band transponders tailored for television and other telecom services for commercial clients and the U.S. government, picking up the mission of the aging AMC-15 satellite launched in 2004.

The Oct. 7 launch will mark the 42nd flight of a Falcon 9 rocket, and the third time one of SpaceX's launchers has lifted off with a reused first stage booster. Designated as Core No. 31, the first stage set to loft the SES 11/EchoStar 105 satellite first flew in February, sending a Dragon supply ship toward the International Space Station before returning to land at Cape Canaveral.

The Falcon 9 rocket will deliver the SES 11/EchoStar 105 satellite toward an orbital perch more than 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometers) above the equator. The high-altitude target for the mission will require the first stage to descend to a landing on a floating platform in the Atlantic Ocean, officials said, leaving insufficient leftover fuel for maneuvers to return to Cape Canaveral.

SpaceX's launch team plans to load super-chilled RP-1 kerosene and liquid oxygen propellant into the Falcon 9 launcher in the final hour of today's mock countdown. The Falcon 9's tanks will be pressurized just before ignition of the rocket's nine Merlin 1D first stage main engines.

The engines will fire for several seconds while hold-down restraints keep the Falcon 9 rocket firmly grounded at pad 39A.

SpaceX uses the customary prelaunch test-firings to check out the readiness of the Falcon 9 rocket, ground systems and launch team. Once the static fire is completed, ground crews will return the Falcon 9 rocket to its nearby assembly hangar at the southern perimeter of pad 39A for attachment of its satellite payload.

The commercial SES 11/EchoStar 105 communications satellite, made by Airbus Defense and Space, has been fueled and readied for launch at Cape Canaveral since arriving from its factory in Toulouse, France, last month.

The satellite is heading toward an operating perch in geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator at 105 degrees west longitude. SES 11/EchoStar 105 will support video distribution and TV broadcasts over the North America during its mission.

The Falcon 9 rocket is set for launch at 6:53 p.m. EDT (2253 GMT) Saturday, Oct. 7, at the opening of a two-hour launch window.

It will be the 14th Falcon 9 flight of the year, a record pace of launch activity for SpaceX, and the 42nd launch of a Falcon 9 rocket overall.

Saturday's launch will fly with a reused Falcon 9 first stage booster, the third time SpaceX has used a previously-flown stage on an orbital launch. The first stage made its first flight Feb. 19 during the launch of a space station cargo ship, then landed at Cape Canaveral a few minutes later.

The first stage on Saturday's launch will descend to a touchdown on SpaceX's floating rocket landing platform in the Atlantic Ocean.

October 3, 2017 (https://spaceflight101.com/spacex-completes-static-fire-test-ahead-of-third-falcon-9-re-use-mission/)

SpaceX test fired a previously flown Falcon 9 booster on its Kennedy Space Center Launch Pad on Monday in preparation for the company's third re-use mission aiming for liftoff on Saturday. Carrying the SES-11 communications satellite, Falcon 9 will be tasked with a high-energy delivery into Geostationary Transfer Orbit, using a first stage that flew earlier this year with a Dragon cargo spacecraft.

The launch of SES-11 will mark the 14th in a record-setting year by SpaceX that so far pulverized the company's previous best mark for the number of launches, extended SpaceX's streak to 12 successful booster recoveries in a row and completed the first two re-flight missions of Falcon 9 first stages – demonstrating what the company had so long worked toward.

First Falcon 9 Re-Use Mission – Photo: SpaceX

The first re-flight mission occurred on March 30 when Falcon 9 B1021 reached space for the second time, (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-ses-10/) dispatching a brand new second stage and the SES-10 satellite toward orbit before making the return trip from the edge of space a second time. BulgariaSat-1  (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-bulgariasat-1/)flew on the second re-use mission on June 23, marking the first flight of an orbital launch vehicle stage from both coasts of the United States after that booster had lifted a group of Iridium-NEXT satellites from Vandenberg in January.

Booster #1031 – earmarked for its second flight this weekend – first saw action on February 19 when lifting off from LC-39A at the Kennedy Space Center with the Dragon SpX-10 (https://spaceflight101.com/dragon-spx10/) spacecraft, carrying 2.5 metric tons of cargo to the International Space Station. Refurbishment work on the Block 3 booster between flights included detailed inspections of the airframe & engines, the replacement of the engine section heat shield and re-attachment of four folded landing legs. SpaceX hopes to cut these steps to an absolute minimum with the inauguration of Falcon 9 Block 5 that will be fully optimized for rapid and cost-effective re-use.

SES-11 – Photo: SES/Airbus Defence & Space

SES, customer of Falcon's first re-use mission, confirmed in August that it, based on the results of the first mission, had opted for another flight-proven booster for the SES-11 launch. Initially, SES said that SES-11 was unlikely to fly on a used booster while SES-14 and 16, also booked to fly on SpaceX, would be the more likely options for re-use missions.

SES-11 was built by Airbus Defence and Space in Europe and weighs in at 5,200 Kilograms, putting it in the same ball park as SES-10 which pushed Falcon 9 to the maximum in terms of performance while preserving sufficient propellant for a sporty landing on the Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship. Based on the EuroStar E3000 platform, SES-11 hosts a hybrid communications payload comprising 24 Ku-Band and 24 C-Band transponders to deliver TV, radio and media distribution across the U.S. & Canada plus Mexico, Hawaii and the Caribbean.

The satellite is also known as EchoStar 105 as EchoStar agreed to lease the full Ku-Band capacity of the satellite for at least ten years to expand its U.S. orbital arc for media distribution and digital networking. SES-11's Ku-Band capacity is replacing the AMC-15 satellite launched back in 2004 while the SES-operated C-Band payload provides replacement coverage for the almost 11-year old AMC-18. Built in Toulouse, France, SES-11 is set for a mission of at least 15 years stationed at 105 degrees west in Geostationary Orbit.

The Falcon 9 for this mission, featuring a previously flown Block 3 first stage and new Block 4 second stage, rolled out to the pad at LC-39A on Monday, still missing its payload per the new procedure instated after the loss of the AMOS-6 satellite in last year's explosion (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-amos-6/) of a Falcon 9 counting down to its static fire. Gearing up for the test, Falcon 9 was placed in a vertical position and put through an initial series of checks before pushing into the automatic countdown sequence at the one-hour point, marking the start of the rapid tanking operation to fill over 500 metric tons of sub-cooled Liquid Oxygen and chilled Rocket Propellant-1 into the two-stage rocket.

Although the second stage is only a bystander in the firing test of the first stage, it also receives a full load of propellant and Helium pressurant to check out the integrity of its systems as a last end-to-end test of the entire launch vehicle to avoid any surprises on launch day. Standing autonomous on its pad, Falcon 9 was isolated from propellant supply, running on internal power and operating under control of its onboard computers when triggering the ignition of the nine Merlin 1D engines on the first stage, soaring to a collective thrust of just under 700 metric ton force.

While newly-built boosters typically perform a 3.5-second static fire for the engines to complete start-up and reach stable operating conditions, the test is slightly changed for flight-proven boosters – extending the burn to up to seven seconds to obtain additional performance data with the engines in steady operation after completing start-up. Monday's firing – occurring around 20:30 UTC – appeared to use a five-second engine burn.

Immediately after the test, SpaceX teams went into a quick review of data to ensure the firing reached its desired duration and all required performance parameters were captured before giving the go-ahead to de-tank the rocket. Falcon 9 will return to the pad-side hangar to meet its payload later in the week while in-depth reviews of data from the test are underway to clear the way for liftoff.

The SES-11/EchoStar 105 mission has a two-hour launch window opening at 22:53 UTC on Saturday, October 7. This will mark the opening of a SpaceX double-header as another Falcon 9 is currently deep in its processing campaign at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California for an early morning liftoff on October 9 with the third group of Iridium-NEXT satellites, to be preceded by a Static Fire Test on October 5.

Launch Complex 39A – Photo: SpaceX

The next Cape Canaveral mission is looking at liftoff on October 30, also using Launch Complex 39A as Space Launch Complex 40 is still in the process of being re-activated after last year's AMOS-6 incident. Work at SLC-40 is largely complete and engineers are currently outfitting the Transporter, Erector, Launcher (TEL) inside the SLC-40 hangar. Initially, SLC-40 had been hoped to re-open for Falcon 9 missions around September/October.

This latest delay at SLC-40 will also push the debut of the Falcon Heavy rocket as a number of modifications have to be made to the LC-39A ground system and TEL before being able to accommodate the three-core launch vehicle, requiring missions to shift back to SLC-40 first to free up LC-39A for outfitting. Speaking at the International Astronautical Congress last week, (http://spaceflight101.com/spacex-explores-commercial-bfr-options/) SpaceX CEO Elon Musk noted that Falcon Heavy is still hoped to fly this year; however, given the recent schedule changes, a more realistic goal would be having Falcon Heavy ready for rollout to the pad before the year is out.

The initial weather outlook for Saturday's planned launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket calls for a 60 percent chance of favorable conditions.

A previously-flown Falcon 9 booster is set to loft the SES 11/EchoStar 105 communications satellite fr om launch pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The two-hour launch window opens at 6:53 p.m. EDT (2253 GMT).

The primary weather concerns will be with cumulus clouds and thick clouds over the Florida spaceport.

Forecasters are watching the forecast path of Tropical Depression Sixteen, which is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm by tomorrow and head north over the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, potentially striking the Gulf Coast somewh ere between Louisiana and the Florida panhandle.

"A high pressure ridge will be slightly north of Central Florida, and winds will be from the southeast gusting to 15 mph along the Space Coast," the Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron said in a forecast issued Wednesday morning. Isolated showers are possible, and significant mid- and upper- level moisture may cause thick cloud layers as well. Solar activity is low and is not a concern for launch. The primary concerns for launch are cumulus clouds and thick cloud layers."

At launch time, forecasters predict cloudy skies, winds from the southeast at 10 to 15 mph, and a temperature of 79 degrees Fahrenheit.

If the launch slips to Sunday evening, there remains a 60 percent chance of acceptable weather.

Liftoff of a previously-flown Falcon 9 rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center with a European-built television broadcast satellite has been pushed back from Saturday until at least next Wednesday night, officials said.

The Falcon 9 launcher was supposed to take off with the SES 11/EchoStar 105 communications satellite Saturday evening, but SES officials said Thursday that the mission would be postponed. An SES official with the launch campaign said liftoff from pad 39A was now expected no earlier than next Wednesday, Oct. 11, to allow SpaceX time to resolve an engine issue on the Falcon 9.

Built by Airbus Defense and Space, the nearly 11,500-pound (5,200-kilogram) satellite carries a shared communications payload for SES and EchoStar.

The Falcon 9 rocket will deploy the SES 11/EchoStar 105 satellite into an elliptical transfer orbit high above Earth, then the spacecraft's on-board thruster will steer it into a circular geostationary orbit along the equator. The spacecraft will begin service hovering over 105 degrees west longitude, giving its antennas coverage over the Americas.

The slip will move the launch of SES 11/EchoStar 105 after a Falcon 9 flight from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California set for Monday, Oct. 9. That mission, flying with a newly-built Falcon 9 rocket, will add 10 more satellites to Iridium's next-generation voice and data relay fleet.

Preparations for the Iridium launch from California's Central Coast are proceeding on schedule, Iridium said Wednesday. All 10 satellites, each about the size of a refrigerator, have been fueled and affixed to their two-tier mounting dispenser in readiness for encapsulation inside the Falcon 9's payload shroud.
Meanwhile, technicians prepared for a hold-down test-firing of the Falcon 9 rocket's Merlin 1D main engines at Vandenberg's Space Launch Complex 4-East as soon as Thursday.

The static fire test for the SES 11/EchoStar 105 flight was completed Monday at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The rocket is not expected to go through another hotfire test once SpaceX resolves the engine problem.

The back-to-back launches will mark the 14th and 15th SpaceX flights this year, the busiest flight rate in the history of the California-based company led by billionaire Elon Musk.

The Falcon 9 launcher was supposed to take off with the SES 11/EchoStar 105 communications satellite Saturday evening, but two SES officials said Thursday that the mission would be postponed. An SES official familiar with the launch campaign said liftoff from pad 39A was now expected no earlier than next Wednesday, Oct. 11.

SpaceX confirmed the delay in a tweet.

"The shift gives us extra time to complete final launch preps with the bonus of bypassing some bad weather headed for the Cape this weekend," a SpaceX spokesperson said.

The company did not disclose a reason for the four-day slip, but one source said SpaceX needed to conduct some "minor engine rework" on the Falcon 9.

Crowned with a European-built communications satellite made to broadcast television over the Americas, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with a previously-flown first stage booster has arrived at Kennedy Space Center's launch pad 39A for liftoff tomorrow.
Спойлер
The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) rocket was lifted vertical at pad 39A just after 6 p.m. EDT (2200 GMT), roughly 24 hours before the opening of its launch window at 6:53 p.m. EDT (2253 GMT) tomorrow.
Ground crews will secure the Falcon 9 rocket overnight as satellite teams conduct final readiness checks on the SES 11/EchoStar 105 communications craft mounted atop the launcher.

The satellite is heading for a perch in geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator, where it will hover at 105 degrees west longitude for a planned 15-year mission broadcasting television channels and relaying video and data across the Americas for SES and EchoStar, two of the world's largest commercial satellite operators.

Built by Airbus Defense and Space, the satellite weighs around 11,500 pounds (5,200 kilograms), and it's the fourth payload for SES and the second for EchoStar to launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The rocket will take about a half-hour to place the SES 11/EchoStar 105 satellite into its targeted orbit.
There is a 90 percent chance of favorable weather during tomorrow's two-hour launch window.

"The atmosphere is drier today which will prevent showers and thunderstorms from developing in the area as the sea breeze forms; therefore, weather is favorable for rollout and lifting operations," forecasters from the U.S. Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron wrote in an outlook issued this morning. "Weather will be similar over the next couple of days and favorable for launch operations. There is only a slight chance of morning and evening isolated coastal showers, causing a slight concern for cumulus clouds for the launch window."

Conditions during the launch window should be partly cloudy, with winds from the northeast at 12 mph, and a temperature of around 79 degrees Fahrenheit.

SpaceX plans to land the Falcon 9's first stage on a platform in the Atlantic Ocean a few minutes after liftoff.

EchoStar 105/SES-11 Mission Press Kit

SpaceX is targeting launch of EchoStar 105/SES-11 from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The two-hour launch window opens on Wednesday, October 11 at 6:53 p.m. EDT, or 22:53 UTC. A two-hour backup launch window opens on Thursday, October 12 at 6:53 p.m. EDT, or 22:53 UTC. The satellite will be deployed approximately 36 minutes after liftoff.

Falcon 9's first stage for the EchoStar 105/SES-11 mission previously supported SpaceX's 10th resupply mission to the International Space Station (CRS-10) in February of this year. Following stage separation, Falcon 9's first stage will attempt a landing on the "Of Course I Still Love You" droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

You can find more information about the mission in our press kit. (http://www.spacex.com/sites/spacex/files/echostar105ses11presskit.pdf)

T-minus 90 minutes and counting. Critical milestones coming in the next half-hour include a poll by the SpaceX launch conductor to begin fueling the booster with super-chilled kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants.
Спойлер
The readiness poll is scheduled for 5:40 p.m. EDT (2140 GMT), followed by the start of RP-1 kerosene loading around three minutes later. Super-cold liquid oxygen will flow into the two-stage rocket beginning at 6:18 p.m. EDT (2218 GMT).

The Falcon 9 rocket will deliver the SES 11/EchoStar 105 communications satellite into an elliptical supersynchronous transfer orbit about a half-hour after liftoff. The rocket's upper stage is programmed to continue firing its engine until is almost out of propellant, a technique called "minimum residual shutdown" devised to inject the satellite into the highest orbit possible.

Owned by SES, the spacercaft's communications payload will be shared with EchoStar to provide television broadcast services over the Americas.

SES will use the satellite's 24 C-band transponders, while EchoStar's portion covers the craft's 24 Ku-band transponders.

Today's launch will be the 43rd flight of a Falcon 9 rocket since it debuted in June 2010, and the 15th Falcon 9 mission so far in 2017.

It will be the third time SpaceX has launched a Falcon 9 rocket with a previously-flown first stage booster. This rocket will fly with a booster that first launched Feb. 19, lofting a Dragon supply ship on a trajectory toward the International Space Station.

Luxembourg-based SES, one of the world's largest commercial satellite operators, was the first customer to sign up for a reused rocket launch with SpaceX. A recovered booster sent the SES 10 communications satellite toward orbit March 30 in a historic launch that went far in demonstrating SpaceX's concept for reusing rocket hardware, a capability the company says will slash the cost of spaceflight.

Another reused booster launched June 23 with the BulgariaSat 1 communications satellite, and the SES 11/EchoStar 105 spacecraft launching today is the third payload to fly on a previously-launched Falcon 9.

Martin Halliwell, chief technology officer at SES, has been one of SpaceX's most loyal proponents in the commercial satellite business.

He told Spaceflight Now earlier today that while his confidence in reused rockets has increased with two successful re-flights, SES was still careful in its decision a few months ago to commit to launching SES 11/EchoStar 105 on a recovered booster.

"We approach every one of these launches in the same way," Halliwell said. "We have a lot of insight with our U.S. citizens, who are working together with SpaceX on a daily basis. We give it the same amount of diligence as we did on the first one. Obviously, we have intrinsically more confidence because we've done it once."

SpaceX spent more than 11 months refurbishing and testing the first stage booster that launched SES 10. For this flight, the turnaround time was less than eight months.

"We have people who work for us that follow the whole thing, from the beginning to the end, and they gave us a thumbs-up," said Neliton Vasconcelos, SES senior vice president of space systems development and engineering. "It's as simple as that. The amount of tests that they did for the first one is different than what they're doing (now), but we believe them and they have the results that it's good to go."

Halliwell said SES did not receive a significant financial discount from SpaceX in switching the SES 11/EchoStar 105 launch to a reused booster, but the agreement did result in an earlier launch date.
The roughly 11,500-pound (5,200-kilogram) satellite, built by Airbus Defense and Space, was originally supposed to launch about one year ago, according to Halliwell. But a Falcon 9 rocket explosion on a launch pad at Cape Canaveral in September 2016 grounded SpaceX missions more than four months, and re-shuffled the company's manifest.

"We should have launched a year ago, Halliwell said. "We've been waiting for a launch for a long, long time."

So SES jumped at the the availability of a recovered rocket in SpaceX's inventory to ensure its next satellite could launch as soon as possible.

SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk said earlier this year the company wants to recoup a $1 billion investment in making the Falcon 9 rocket's first stage recoverable and reusable, so prices will not drop significantly in the short-term. In future years, Musk said Falcon 9s could be landed and re-launched within 24 hours, cutting costs to little more than the price of propellant.

Karim Michel Sabbagh, CEO of SES, is pushing for a 50 percent reduction in Falcon 9 prices, and he is not alone. A Falcon 9 launch currently sells for around $61 million commercially, according to SpaceX's website.

"Obviously, we'd love to see that," Halliwell said. "I would love to, but I think we're going to have about the sort of numbers that we've got. The costs are increasing. Will demand increase? Will demand drive the pricing associated with it? I don't know. What does the cost need to be to be self-sustaining. I don't know the answer to any of this. Will it come down to $30 million? I don't think so."

While many space industry officials and observers have called attention to the impact of reused rockets on launch prices, Halliwell said there is another, less discussed benefit: launch availability.

"I think, in the long term, they've got so much hardware which is coming back, it has to help," he said. "It has to make the cadence improve, and the fact they've got two (launch sites), and maybe in the future four -- between pad 40, 39A, Vandenberg and Texas -- wow, that should be good. For us, it gives us a better chance to get into space on time."

Without taking the opportunity to fly on a reused rocket, Halliwell said it's likely the launch of SES 11/EchoStar 105 "would have been somewhat delayed because we would have had to wait for hardware to become available for us."

"It's manufactured at a certain rate, and it can only come out of the factory at a certain pace, so almost certainly we would have still been waiting."

Commercial satellite operators have raised concerns about the schedules of several launch operators. SpaceX grounded its Falcon 9 rockets after two failures in 2015 and 2016, and Russian Proton rockets did not fly for a year from mid-2016 through mid-2017 as engineers resolved engine quality concerns.
Halliwell said most satellites spend months in storage between the end of their construction and shipment to their launch base.

"You can imagine that costs us a fortune," he said. "You've paid for the spacecraft. You've paid your launch vehicle. The only thing you really haven't paid is the final installment on your insurance, but you're cashed out, just sitting there waiting to launch. This whole cadence idea, and the capability of getting to space on time, is hugely important for us from a financial point-of-view."

October 12, 2017 (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-ses-11/falcon-9-successfully-launches-ses-11/)

SpaceX successfully launched its third re-flown Falcon 9 rocket Wednesday, lifting off fr om Florida's Cape Canaveral at sunset with the SES 11 broadcasting satellite. Checking off the company's second orbital delivery in just 60 hours, Falcon 9 successfully sent the 5,200-Kilogram satellite into a Geostationary Transfer Orbit and managed a challenging first stage landing on SpaceX's East Coast Drone Ship that battled choppy sea conditions in the landing zone.

The 70-meter tall Falcon 9 thundered off fr om Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center at 22:53 UTC, 6:53 p.m. local time – just three minutes before sunset. Departing the Florida Space Coast, Falcon 9 turned eastward, flying toward the dark of night for its sixth Geotransfer mission of the year. The first stage dropped away after firing for 155 seconds and the MVac-powered second stage first injected the vehicle into a Parking Orbit before igniting again to lift the high point of the orbit and send SES 11 on its way 36 minutes after liftoff.

For the first stage, separation marked the beginning of a high-speed return to Earth as the mission did not allow the booster to slow down much before hitting the atmosphere. A brief three-engine entry burn hit the brakes at the last moment before experiencing the intense heat and deceleration of re-entry. Descending toward the 'Of Course I Still Love You' Drone Ship, Booster #1031 lit up its center engine and managed a challenging landing, coming to rest at twilight to keep SpaceX's streak of landing successes unbroken, now up to fourteen.

Wednesday night's flight came right on the heels of the successful West Coast mission (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-iridium-next-flight-3/) of Falcon 9, deploying the third group of Iridium-NEXT satellites on Monday after lifting off fr om California's Vandenberg Air Force Base. 2017 has been SpaceX's most productive year yet; the California-based launch provider is now up to 15 performed missions this year and on course to hit its target of 20 flights that will put the company above any commercial contender and competes favorably with the number of launches performed by Russia and China.

Wednesday's Falcon 9 mission was the 43rd launch of the SpaceX workhorse, the 23rd of the Full Thrust version and the third of a 'flight-proven' first stage, that is one that has at least one prior operational flight under its belt. The mission was the first Geotransfer mission for the Falcon 9 after a string of four Low Earth Orbit deliveries and marked Falcon 9's six high-energy deployment of the year.

SES and SpaceX finalized plans in August to fly the SES 11 mission with a previously used first stage in continuing efforts to bring re-flight missions closer to routine, a step SpaceX hopes to complete when inaugurating the Falcon 9 Block 5 version that will allow for rapid and cost-effective re-use. The first stage flying on Wednesday made its first trip into space back in February when lifting the Dragon SpX-10 (https://spaceflight101.com/dragon-spx10/) cargo spacecraft into orbit for an ISS resupply mission under SpaceX's contract with NASA.

SES, headquartered in Luxembourg and one of the world's largest satellite communications providers, has been a faithful customer to SpaceX for several years. It was the SES 8 satellite that became Falcon 9's first-ever payload carried into Geostationary Transfer Orbit in December 2013 and the SES 9 satellite, heading uphill in March 2016, was the first GTO mission for the enhanced Falcon 9 FT vehicle. Earlier in 2017, SES and SpaceX made history with the first Falcon 9 re-flight mission that successfully lifted the SES 10 satellite and brought SpaceX's re-use concepts a big step closer to reality. The second re-use mission came in June with the BulgariaSat-1 satellite.

SES 11, also known as EchoStar 105, was built by Airbus Defence and Space based on the flight-proven Eurostar E3000 satellite platform, hosting a hybrid communications payload comprising 24 Ku-Band and 24 C-Band transponders. The satellite's entire Ku-Band capacity has been leased to EchoStar for media distribution and digital networking services in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean while the C-Band payload will be operated by SES for video and data services.

Destined for a position at 105° West in Geostationary Orbit, SES 11 will replace a pair of satellites: the 13-year old AMC-15 Ku/Ka-Band satellite and the all-C-Band AMC-18 that has been in operation since launching in 2006, though recently suffered an anomaly. Built for a 15-year service life, SES 11 is joining the SES 1 and SES 3 satellites at the center of SES's North American neighborhood from where the company reaches more than 100 million TV homes.

SES 11 was initially planned for liftoff on Saturday, but SpaceX had to reverse the order of their Falcon 9 double-header when an engine-related issue cropped up on the 1031 booster.

The vehicle was wheeled from its pad-side hangar up to Launch Complex 39A Tuesday afternoon and took its vertical launch position before sunset to spend 24 hours overlooking the ocean while engineers put the finishing touches on the rocket and launch complex.

After power-up on Wednesday, Falcon 9 went through a myriad of checkouts to clear the way for the fast-paced automated countdown sequence, picking up at the T-70-minute mark after all launch controllers at the Cape and engineering support in California gave a unanimous GO, looking at a clean vehicle and very favorable weather conditions.

>> Falcon 9 Launch Vehicle Overview (http://spaceflight101.com/spacerockets/falcon-9-ft/)

The complex tanking sequence kicked off with loading some 155 metric tons of Rocket Propellant 1, chilled to -7°C, into the two-stage rocket. Liquid Oxygen loading picked up on the first stage at T-35 minutes and 15 minutes later on the second stage in a carefully throttled sequence to ensure Falcon 9 reached its flight mass of around 360 metric tons of -207°C LOX just in time for liftoff, preventing the sub-cooled oxidizer from warming excessively.

The vehicle also received Helium pressurant gas to keep the tanks pressurized during flight and Nitrogen attitude control system propellant to keep both stages of the rocket flying true and level throughout the mission.

While propellants were loading into the Falcon 9, SES 11 made its transfer to internal power and the Eastern Range declared clearance for launch. Dozens of computer-controlled events were checked off in the last seven countdown minutes, starting with the chilldown of the nine Merlin 1D engines on the business end of the vehicle. Final hydraulic checks were passed without issue and Falcon 9 began standing on its own as the Strongback structure retracted by 1.5 degrees and prepared for a rapid kickback at liftoff. Flight levels on all tanks were called out by T-2 minutes and Falcon 9 was handed control of the countdown at T-1 minute, coinciding with the final call that the vehicle's Autonomous Flight Termination System was ready.

With the final GO given by the Launch Director with half a minute on the clock, Falcon 9 reached flight pressures and started breathing fire at T-3 seconds, lighting up its nine Merlin 1D engines to reach a collective launch thrust of nearly 700 metric tons.

Falcon 9 made its 11th blastoff from historic Pad 39 right at the opening of the launch window at 22:53:00 UTC, rising vertically as the nine engines gimbaled to keep the 550-metric-ton rocket in an upright posture. With colorful skies as a backdrop, Falcon 9 began its pitch maneuver to attain a south-easterly ascent trajectory on the standard route to Geostationary Transfer Orbit, aiming for a quick overflight of the Atlantic Ocean.

Burning 2,450 Kilograms of chilled propellants per second, Falcon 9 reached the speed of sound under 70 seconds after launch and encountered Maximum Aerodynamic Pressure at T+78 seconds, throttling back on its engines for a brief period to reduce stress on the used airframe of the rocket. MaxQ has been a point watched very closely in SpaceX's re-use missions to date as it puts the once-flown airframe through peak stresses for the second time.

Stage 1 & 2 Parting Ways – Photo: SpaceX Webcast

While the first stage was still firing on all cylinders, the MVac engine on the second stage began chilling down its turbomachinery to be ready for stage separation. MECO – Main Engine Cutoff on the first stage was confirmed two minutes and 35 seconds into the flight after the Booster #1031 accelerated the stack to a speed of 2.29 Kilometers per second.

Stage separation, accomplished via four pneumatic pushers, occurred three seconds later at an altitude of 68 Kilometers with the second stage immediately switching to start-up and the first stage holding its orientation to avoid being blasted side-on as the second stage fired up. The 95,000-Kilogram MVac engine ignited just two seconds after staging on a planned burn of five minutes and 58 seconds to push the vehicle into a Low Earth Parking Orbit.

Due to the energy requirements for a GTO mission, the first stage was only able to save a minimum of propellants for its trip back to Earth. Therefore, it remained on a ballistic arc after stage separation, not performing a boost back maneuver which required the OCISLY Drone Ship to be moved quite a bit off shore, holding position 636 Kilometers from the Cape Canaveral launch pad. While flying outside the atmosphere, the first stage reached a peak altitude of 119 Kilometers used its nitrogen thrusters to orient itself for re-entry.

Dipping into the dense atmosphere, the booster fired up three of its engines at T+6 minutes and 28 seconds when passing 58 Kilometers in altitude. The brief 20-second Entry Burn slowed the booster by 651 meters per second to 1.64 km/s in order to create a manageable re-entry, but with much higher heat load than a Low Earth Orbit mission (for reference, Monday's Iridium-3 mission, as a typical LEO delivery, had an entry speed of only 870m/s).

Stage 1 Entry – Photo: SpaceX Webcast

The rigors of re-entry became evident through onboard camera views from the booster that showed plasma around the booster and the grid fins briefly catching on fire, a sight that will only be around for so long as the Block 5 vehicle will use titanium grid fins that can weather the entry environment without issue. Descending through the atmosphere, the booster relied on its grid fins – or what was left of them – to maneuver toward the Drone Ship, holding a programmed position using its azimuth thrusters.

The booster fired up on the critical landing burn right at the T+8-minute mark, having passed through the sound barrier for the second time on Wednesday and the fourth time in its career. The engine and grid fins worked in unison to bring the booster to a vertical descent toward the Drone Ship's deck and the four landing legs deployed just before touchdown.

Despite rough seas and windy conditions, Booster #1031 managed an on-target touchdown on 'Of Course I Still Love You,' bringing SpaceX's record to 18/23 for overall landing success, 10/15 at sea, and improving the company's streak to 14 successful recoveries in a row.

As the Block 3 booster, the 1031 vehicle is unlikely to see space again, though its recovery represents important data for SpaceX on the condition of the various components on the vehicle after going through the flight environment twice.

While the first stage navigated through gusty winds, Stage 2 was much higher up wh ere aerodynamics were no longer a concern. Falcon 9 separated its fairing three minutes and 40 seconds into the flight and the second stage delivered excellent performance, shutting down eight minutes and 38 seconds into the flight when sensing it had arrived in orbit.

Next for the second stage was a coast phase of a little over 18 minutes to continue heading south east and perform the second burn around the equator in order to position the high point of the resulting orbit above the equator on the opposite side of the planet – easing the process of transferring the satellite into its operational Geostationary Orbit.

MVac re-started at around T+27 minutes, 5 seconds and burned for ~56 seconds, spending the last part of the burn in a gradual throttle-down to lim it acceleration on the second stage and satellite to 5Gs. The second burn raised the vehicle's velocity by 2.45 Kilometers per second and Launch Controllers called out a good orbital insertion, confirming Falcon 9 had reached the intended elliptical orbit.

SES 11 departed the second stage 36 minutes after launch and was expected to check in with ground stations a short time later to begin a checkout process before several days of orbit-raising operations to maneuver into Geostationary Orbit wh ere the satellite can remain locked over the same location on Earth.

Checking off a pair of missions this week, SpaceX will now shift focus on its next flight, aiming for an October 30 liftoff with the KoreaSat-5A communications satellite, also targeting Geostationary Transfer Orbit. SpaceX missions from Florida are expected to shift back to Space Launch Complex 40 in November, allowing LC-39A to enter a downtime while undergoing outfitting work for the inaugural Falcon Heavy mission that is still on the manifest for late 2017, though likely to slip into next year.

Built by Airbus, EchoStar 105/ SES-11 is a dual-mission satellite, providing SES with a C-band payload of 24 transponders of 36 MHz, owned and operated by SES, marketed under the name SES-11, and EchoStar with 24 Ku-band transponders of 36 MHz, marketed as EchoStar 105. The high-powered communications satellite replaces C-band capacity for AMC-18 and Ku-band capacity for AMC-15 at the 105 degrees West orbital slot.

SES-11 is designed to accelerate the development of the US Prime video neighbourhood and the delivery of high definition (HD) and ultra-high definition (UHD) channels. It offers comprehensive coverage over North America, including Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean. The satellite's C-band capacity is optimised for digital television delivery, and will join SES-1 and SES-3 at the centre of SES's North American orbital arc which reaches more than 100 million TV homes and 100% penetration in the US.

SES-11 will be utilised for the expansion of SES's North America Ultra HD platform, which hosts the world's largest Ultra HD bouquet of 10 Ultra HD channels and reaches a combined audience of more than 10 million subscribers. SES-11 will also empower business and government customers to capture new opportunities and expand their reach across the region.

Martin Halliwell, Chief Technology Officer of SES, said, "The successful launch of SES-11 further strengthens the centre of SES's North American orbital arc and enables us to continue to provide a premium C-band service to the leading cable operators across the US. We are also proud to launch on another SpaceX flight-proven Falcon 9 rocket and to continuously participate in innovative technology developments within the launch industry."

Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO at SpaceX, "We are pleased to continue working together with SES, a company that strongly supports innovation and SpaceX's proven launch capabilities."

Maintaining a brisk flight rate three days after its last launch, SpaceX sent a Falcon 9 booster powered by a reused first stage into orbit Wednesday evening from Florida with an Airbus-built communications satellite for SES and EchoStar.

The successful launch placed the 5.7-ton (5.2-metric ton) satellite in a "supersynchronous" orbit arcing thousands of miles above Earth, and the Falcon 9's first stage returned to landing on a football field-sized barge holding position around 200 miles (300 kilometers) east of Cape Canaveral.

Wednesday's mission was the 15th Falcon 9 flight of the year, and the second in three days, coming on the heels of a launch Monday from California's Central Coast.

Owned by SES, the payload carried into orbit Wednesday from the Kennedy Space Center will broadcast television programming, relay video for cable outlets, and support data services over the Americas during a mission expected to last at least 15 years.

Luxembourg-based SES and Colorado-headquartered EchoStar Corp. will share the satellite's communications capacity in a "condosat" arrangement announced in 2014. SES calls its portion of the spacecraft SES 11, and EchoStar named the mission EchoStar 105.

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from pad 39A at the Florida spaceport at 6:53 p.m. EDT (2253 GMT) Wednesday after a textbook countdown, climbed into a clear evening sky just before sunset and turned on an easterly heading as it soared into the stratosphere.

Nine Merlin 1D engines generated 1.7 million pounds of window-rattling thrust as the Falcon 9 rocket departed the Kennedy Space Center, chugging a super-chilled, densified mixture of RP-1 kerosene and liquid oxygen.

The first stage's nine main engines shut down around two-and-a-half minutes after liftoff. Moments later, the 14-story booster dropped away from the Falcon 9's second stage, then flipped around to fly tail first, setting up for a scorching re-entry from an altitude of 74 miles (119 kilometers).

Grid fins unfurled from the cigar-shaped booster to help guide it back to Earth, and three of the first stage engines reignited for an entry burn, followed by a final braking maneuver with one of the Merlin engines as it approached SpaceX's drone ship, dubbed "Of Course I Still Love You."

Four landing legs made of carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb extended just before the rocket touched down on the floating barge in rough seas, notching the 18th intact recovery of a Falcon 9 first stage booster in 23 tries.

The landing at sea completed a seemingly flawless re-flight for the first stage booster, which logged its first mission in February sending a Dragon supply ship on a trajectory toward the International Space Station, then returned to Cape Canaveral for recovery.

Going into Wednesday's flight, SES had experience launching a satellite on a previously-flown Falcon 9 booster. The global satellite operator put one of its payloads on the first Falcon 9 launch with a reused first stage March 30, making history and going far in demonstrating SpaceX's concept for reusing rocket hardware, a capability the company says will slash the cost of spaceflight.

Another reused booster launched June 23 with the BulgariaSat 1 communications satellite, and the SES 11/EchoStar 105 spacecraft launched Wednesday was the third payload to fly on a previously-launched Falcon 9.

A camera affixed to the Falcon 9's upper stage continued streaming live views from space as a vacuum-rated Merlin engine ignited two times to propel the SES 11/EchoStar 105 satellite into orbit.

The spacecraft deployed from the launcher around 36 minutes into the mission as it flew off the east coast of Africa. Ground controllers received the first signals from the SES 11/EchoStar 105 satellite a few minutes later, and engineers confirmed it was operating normally.

Publicly-available U.S. military tracking data indicated the satellite was released in an elliptical transfer orbit ranging in altitude between 195 miles (314 kilometers) and 25,181 miles (40,526 kilometers). The military's space surveillance network reported the satellite was orbiting at a tilt of 27.9 degrees to the equator.

Over the next couple of weeks, the spacecraft's own liquid-fueled engine will conduct three apogee burns and one perigee burn at the high and low points of its orbit, eventually settling in a circular geostationary orbit 22,300 miles (35,800 kilometers) directly over the equator.

The satellite's speed at that altitude will match the rate of Earth's rotation, and it will hover over an operating post at 105 degrees west longitude, entering commercial service by late November.

SES will take charge of the satellite's 24 C-band transponders, and EchoStar will control 24 Ku-band transponders.

"From our point-of-view, it's basically for the U.S. video neighborhood, and specifically for the delivery of HD and Ultra HD," said Martin Halliwell, chief technology officer, in an interview before the launch.

"We're trying to utilize this for the development of Ultra HD, trying to encourage the usage and distribution of that. We're covering the whole of (the continental United States), plus Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean as well, so it has very good coverage."

SES will primarily use the satellite to relay video programming for cable channels.

EchoStar says it will employ the relay station's Ku-band instruments for video distribution and data services for media companies, corporate customers, and the U.S. government and military over the United States, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.

The newest member of the SES and EchoStar fleets will replace the AMC 15 and AMC 18 satellites launched in 2004 and 2006.

Halliwell has been one of SpaceX's most loyal proponents in the commercial satellite business.

He said SES did not receive a significant financial discount from SpaceX in switching the SES 11/EchoStar 105 launch to a reused booster, but the agreement did result in an earlier launch date.

"Obviously, we'd love to see that," Halliwell said, sharing his personal prediction on future launch price movement. "I would love to, but I think we're going to have about the sort of numbers that we've got ... Will demand increase? Will demand drive the pricing associated with it? I don't know. What does the cost need to be to be self-sustaining? I don't know the answer to any of this. Will it come down to $30 million? I don't think so."

While many space industry officials and observers have called attention to the impact of reused rockets on launch prices, Halliwell said there is another, less discussed benefit: launch availability.

"I think, in the long term, they've got so much hardware which is coming back, it has to help," he said. "It has to make the cadence improve, and the fact they've got two (launch sites), and maybe in the future four — between pad 40, 39A, Vandenberg and Texas — wow, that should be good. For us, it gives us a better chance to get into space on time."

According to Halliwell, most satellites spend months in storage between the end of construction and shipment to their launch base. Such delays come with financial pitfalls for satellite owners, who have already paid for the spacecraft and launch services, but are not earning revenue with their new asset.

SES is considering launching its next satellite — SES 16 developed in partnership with the government of Luxembourg — with a reused Falcon 9 booster in January.

SpaceX plans approximately five more missions before the end of the year — four from Florida and one from California — potentially including the inaugural test flight of the company's huge Falcon Heavy rocket.

Next on the company's manifest is the launch of the Koreasat 5A commercial communications satellite for direct-to-home television broadcasting in the Asia-Pacific region, and maritime relay services across Asia, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean.

The Koreasat 5A mission is set for liftoff no earlier than Oct. 30 from pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center.

October 15, 2017 (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-ses-11/spacex-drone-ships-return-to-home-ports-with-more-less-used-falcon-9-rockets/)

SpaceX's two Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ships have returned to their home ports on the East and West Coast of the United States after catching Falcon 9 boosters earlier this week.

Receiving the two boosters, ground crews will be tasked with unloading them fr om the ships and put them through post-flight safing with one booster in slightly less toasty condition entering refurbishment for a future mission and the other, well roasted first stage heading into inspections before retirement after a pair of operational missions.

Moving through its busy 2017 manifest at brisk pace, SpaceX managed to pack two launches into this week, starting off on Monday with the company's third mission in support of the deployment of the Iridium-NEXT constellation. Falcon 9, featuring brand new Block 4 first and second stages, lifted off from SLC-4E at Vandenberg Air Force Base before sunrise on Monday, successfully delivering the ten satellites into their planned 620-Kilometer orbit and returning the first stage, designated Booster #1041, to the 'Just Read The Instructions' Drone Ship waiting 244 Kilometers south of the California launch site.

The second Falcon 9 launch of the week occurred at sunset on Wednesday from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39A, featuring a previously flown first stage lifting off with the SES 11 broadcasting satellite. Having flown for the first time back in February on a Dragon resupply mission, the booster was facing a more challenging landing as SES 11 required higher performance from the launch vehicle to reach its desired high-energy transfer orbit.

Coming in hot and heavy, Booster #1031 successfully managed to find the Drone Ship 'Of Course I Still Love You' located 636 Kilometers from Cape Canaveral, battling choppy seas to provide a stable landing platform to the booster.

This marked the second time both SpaceX Drone Ships were out at sea with Falcon 9 stages sitting atop after the Iridium-2 booster and twice-flown BulgariaSat-1 booster returned in close succession in June 2017.

This week's Drone Ship landings increased SpaceX's streak to fourteen successful recoveries in a row and improves the company's stats for sea-based landings to 11 out of 16 tries. All seven landing attempts on pads on land have been successful, giving SpaceX a total of 15 recovered boosters including three that have flown to the edge of SpaceX and back twice.

After landing, the boosters were safed remotely to ensure their tanks were at safe pressures and any ordnances were secure before engineers were allowed to re-board the Drone Ships to tie down the first stages for their trip into port. Both recovery campaigns were not without issue as engineers in the Pacific had to hold off on re-boarding the Drone Ship due to rough seas, though booster 1041 remained in position close to the center of the prominent SpaceX logo painted on deck to mark the bullseye landing target.

In the waters of the Atlantic, Falcon 9 Booster #1031 was leaning to one side after using up some of its crush core capability when making its twilight touchdown. This apparently precluded the Octograbber or Roomba from being used to remotely secure the first stage as images show the traditional jackstands were used to tie it down on deck for the journey back to port.

Booster #1041 arrived at the Port of Los Angeles Thursday morning and was lifted off the Drone Ship and onto a ground stand by Friday for the removal of its landing legs, draining of leftover fuel and igniter fluid and transfer to a horizontal position to return to SpaceX's manufacturing base in Hawthorne, just over 20 Kilometers north from the port as the crow flies.

On the East Coast wh ere most of SpaceX's recoveries have occurred so far, the stage was set for an early Sunday morning arrival of Booster #1031 with the Drone Ship holding clear of the cost until being allowed into Port Canaveral. Prior to its arrival, the Go Searcher support ship headed into port with what appeared to be a piece of the rocket's payload fairing, (https://www.flickr.com/photos/29418863@N04/sets/72157686191312452) indicating SpaceX is making quiet progress in the area of fairing recovery as the expectation is for fairing re-use to be realized at some point next year.

'Of Course I Still Love You' was towed into Port Canaveral around sunrise, marking 1031's first return through port since its first mission ended with a land-based landing at Cape Canaveral's Landing Zone 1, enabled by plenty of surplus propellants on Low Earth Orbit deliveries.

(https://scontent-frt3-2.cdninstagram.com/t51.2885-15/e35/22580630_2096373227253180_2108330786259206144_n.jpg) (https://www.instagram.com/p/BaRGO3tH5Sg/)

Comparing the two stages that returned to shore this week, the differences between Low Earth Orbit and Geotransfer Missions become obvious. Booster #1041, although appearing much darker than when it departed California due to soot deposited onto its fuel tank section, is seen in almost pristine shape with no obvious damage and four perfectly intact grid fins, minus the loss of some of their coating. The twice-flown 1031 on the other hand, suffered a bit more as it faced much higher entry energy.

(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/152725.jpg) (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-ses-11/wp-content/uploads/sites/184/2017/10/iridiumnext3-launch-11b.jpg)
Booster #1041 on Final Approach to JRTI -Photo: SpaceX Webcast

Although the #1041 vehicle carried a heavier load than #1031, delivering payloads to Low Earth Orbit leaves the first stage with plenty of excess performance. This allowed Booster #1041 to conduct a boost-back maneuver immediately after sending the second stage on its way, hitting the brakes and shortening its downrange travel distance. A 13-second burn at re-entry slowed the booster to 871 meters per second for atmospheric entry.

Sending the Falcon 9 second stage with SES 11 on its way toward Geostationary Transfer Orbit required Booster #1031 to fire its engines 12 seconds longer than #1041, consequently accelerating the vehicle to a higher MECO velocity (2.29km/s vs. 1.93km/s for Iridium-3) and burning propellants that would not be available for a boost back maneuver. As a result, #1031 could only make a twenty-second braking maneuver just before re-entry, slowing down to 1.66 Kilometers per second (hitting the atmosphere 793m/s faster than #1041).

Kinetic energy increases as a square of the velocity and peak heating as a cube of velocity – explaining why even a slightly higher MECO velocity/entry speed will have a considerable effect on the stage's return journey. Onboard video from Booster #1031 showed the vehicle immersed in plasma as it hit the dense atmosphere en-route to a post-sunset landing on the OCISLY Drone Ship. Pieces of the engine section heat shield were seen flying off and the aluminum grid fins were glowing white hot before onboard video cut out. Photos of the booster after its return showed part of the grid fins facing the hypersonic flow had burned away and molten aluminum had been deposited onto the interstage downstream.

Although Booster #1031, a Block 3 vehicle, is unlikely to fly to space a third time, its recovery will provide SpaceX with additional data on how repeat mission cycles affect the different components on the booster. This knowledge can be used to tweak the design of the Falcon 9 Block 5 vehicle that will represent the launcher's final design iteration, optimized for high performance and easy re-use of the first stage without extensive refurbishment work in between flights to realize SpaceX's goal of considerably cutting costs for access to space.

With both boosters back on dry land, SpaceX will begin shifting focus to its next mission, still targeting an October 30 liftoff from LC-39A with the KoreaSat-5A communications satellite. After that, a previously undisclosed mission has shown up on the East Coast manifest – going only by the code name Zuma with no payload or customer associated with it. This flight, documentation filed by SpaceX with the Federal Communications Commission shows, is targeting launch as early as mid-November with filings indicating the mission would feature a Landing Zone 1 recovery of the first stage. It is highly unusual for a mission to remain secret until this close to launch.

After the mysterious Zuma launch, SpaceX will move Falcon 9 east coast operations back to Space Launch Complex 40 that was knocked offline on September 1st, 2016 – sustaining extensive damage in the explosion of the Falcon 9 rocket carrying AMOS-6 (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-amos-6/) during the countdown toward its Static Fire Test. Moving back to SLC-40 with the Dragon SpX-13 mission (NET Late November), SpaceX will be clear to enter outfitting tasks on LC-39A to set up for the inaugural mission of the three-core Falcon Heavy rocket.

The dual-mission satellite, providing SES with a C-band payload of 24 transponders of 36 MHz, marketed under the name SES-11, and providing EchoStar with 24 Ku-band transponders of 36 MHz, marketed as EchoStar 105, was launched into space on 11 October 2017 at 6:53 PM EDT. Since then, extensive in-orbit tests have confirmed the flawless functioning of the spacecraft.

This is the second time SES has launched on a flight-proven Falcon 9 rocket, and is SES's fourth launch with SpaceX. The high-powered communications satellite built by Airbus replaces C-band capacity for AMC-18 and Ku-band capacity for AMC-15 at the 105 degrees West orbital slot.

SES-11 is designed to accelerate the development of the US Prime video neighbourhood and the delivery of high definition (HD) and ultra-high definition (UHD) channels. It offers comprehensive coverage over North America, including Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean. The satellite's C-band capacity is optimised for digital television delivery, and will join SES-1 and SES-3 at the centre of SES's North American orbital arc which reaches more than 100 million TV homes and has 100% penetration in the US.

SES-11 will be utilised for the expansion of SES's North America Ultra HD platform, which hosts the world's largest Ultra HD bouquet of 10 Ultra HD channels and reaches a combined audience of more than 10 million subscribers.

SES-11 will also allow business and government customers to capture new opportunities and expand their reach across the region.

Martin Halliwell, Chief Technology Officer at SES, said, "Thanks to the hard work put in by the Airbus, SpaceX and SES teams, SES-11 is now ready to provide a premium C-band service to the leading cable operators across the US and deliver high-quality TV content to more than 100 million TV homes in the US."
