Japan has successfully launched an H2A rocket carrying a new communications satellite from the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan. It was the 43rd launch of this type of rocket.

The launch took place at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday. The rocket rose steadily and separated from its booster. It released the satellite 30 minutes after liftoff at an altitude of 300 kilometers as planned.

The satellite will transmit high-speed data and images of the Earth to a base station, as well as other data for the Cabinet Satellite Intelligence Center.

The satellite will use its own engine to enter orbit 36,000 kilometers above the equator.

The satellite can transmit data for nine hours per day on average, or nine times more than the previous model.

It was the 46th consecutive successful launch since 2005, including those of H2B rockets. It also marked 51 successful launches out of a total of 52 overall.

The 98 percent success rate is among the highest in the world.

One satellite is equipped with two functions, JAXA's "optical data relay satellite" and "data relay satellite No. 1" of the Cabinet Satellite Information Center. Although it is a geostationary satellite launched over the equator, the longitude is not disclosed. The center operates the satellite itself.

The current state of the satellite is normal, and it is said that it will reach the satellite orbit in a dozen days while confirming its functions. The operation is scheduled to start in a few months. The latitude of the geosynchronous orbit that will be finally launched has not been clarified, but it is highly possible that it is 90.75 degrees east longitude where the retired data relay technology satellite "Kodama" (DRTS) was located.

Data relay satellite No. 1 / Optical data relay satellite

Data relay satellite No. 1 is a satellite operated by the Cabinet Satellite Information Center of the Cabinet Secretariat that relays communications from other satellites. In addition, JAXA's "optical satellite communication system (LUCAS)" communication device is also installed in the form of sharing a satellite bus (housing), and the technology and operation will be demonstrated. For this reason, JAXA calls this satellite "optical data relay satellite" or "JDRS (Japanese Data Relay System)".

This launch is carried out in the form of "Mitsubishi Heavy Industries executes the launch performed by the Cabinet Satellite Information Center", and the main body related to the entire satellite, launch, and satellite bus operation is on the Cabinet Satellite Information Center side. It has been suggested. In 2017, SKY Perfect JSAT received an order from JAXA for "business related to bus operation of optical data relay satellites", and before the operation of the JAXA side bus part of the satellite launched this time or the entire satellite bus The company is expected to be responsible for the actual work such as preparation and operation / maintenance of satellite buses.

Since it is also a satellite of the Cabinet Satellite Information Center, the details of the satellite are not disclosed, but the mass at launch is 4000 kg or less, and the design life of LUCAS equipment is said to be 10 years.

The Cabinet Satellite Information Center paid 21.3 billion yen and JAXA 26.5 billion yen for satellite development and launch costs.

The first data relay satellite has the role of relaying the communication of data acquired by the information gathering satellite operated by the center. In the past, communication could only be exchanged when the information gathering satellite passed through a ground station on the ground, but with the introduction of this satellite, the communication time zone has increased significantly. Immediateness and data transmission capacity will be improved.

Currently, the information gathering satellites are operated in the form of maintaining four "core satellites", but in the future, four "time axis diversification satellites" that can be observed at different times from the core satellites in the Basic Space Plan , And it is stipulated that a total of 10 satellites will be operated, including 2 data relay satellites, and the launch of the first data relay satellite is one step closer to its completion.

According to Mr. Hiroe Noda, an investigator with the Administration Department of the Cabinet Satellite Information Center, "the completion of the 10-aircraft system is expected to be after Reiwa 10 (2028)."

On the other hand, JAXA's optical intersatellite communication system (LUCAS) is a system that aims to communicate between earth observation satellites and relay satellites using laser light, and is a system that uses conventional microwaves (radio waves). In comparison, while taking advantage of the advantages of relaying data using satellites (longer communication time, immediacy), speeding up data, reducing the size and weight of satellite-mounted equipment, and improving interference resistance, etc. Can be done.

JAXA will use the optical intersatellite communication experimental satellite "Kirari" (OICETS) launched in 2005 to demonstrate optical communication with the European Space Agency's (ESA) advanced data relay technology satellite "ARTEMIS". We are conducting experiments, and LUCAS was developed based on the results.

At present, there is no other satellite for optical communication using LUCAS, but LUCAS will be added to the "advanced optical satellite (ALOS-3)" and "advanced radar satellite (ALOS-4)" scheduled to be launched after 2021. It is planned to install the optical communication device of the above and to demonstrate the technology and operation related to the optical intersatellite communication.

During the five months after the launch, in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications / National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), optical communication will be performed with the satellite using NICT's optical ground station, and LUCAS onboard the satellite will be used. It is said that the soundness of the equipment will be confirmed. In addition, even after the start of operation, various experiments will be conducted to enable standard use of optical communication between satellites and ground stations in the future.

Regarding whether the information gathering satellite will use optical communication in the future, Mr. Noda commented, "There is no such plan at this time." However, the feature of optical communication, which has a large capacity and excellent confidentiality, may meet the purpose of the information gathering satellite and may be adopted in the future.

Status of Optical Communication Payload Aboard Optical Data Relay Satellite

December 9, 2020 (JST)

National Research & Development Agency
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) confirmed that an optical communication payload for Laser Utilizing Communication System (LUCAS*) aboard an optical data relay satellite has been activated normally on December 9, 2020. The optical data relay satellite was launched by the H-IIA F-43 rocket from Tanegashima Space Center on November 29.

Further operation status of LUCAS will be updated on the JAXA website.

JAXA website "Laser Utilizing Communication System (LUCAS)" http://www.satnavi.jaxa.jp/project/lucas/ (Japanese Only)

*LUCAS is to relay data between satellites, consisting of the optical communication payload mounted on the optical data relay satellite, optical communication payloads mounted on follow-on satellites including Advanced Land Observing Satellite-3 "DAICHI-3" (ALOS-3) and the optical ground system.
