Two more SSL communications satellites are scheduled to ship to SpaceX launch base over the next month including ..., and the Merah Putih satellite (previously known as Telkom-4), for Indonesia's largest telecommunication and network provider, PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk.

Merah Putih

Merah Putih, a name which represents the red and white of the Indonesian flag, will be integrated into Telkom's greater telecommunications network to provide service throughout the 17 thousand islands of the Indonesian archipelago, as well as India and other parts of South and Southeast Asia. Satellite forms the telecommunications backbone that connects Indonesia, along with other technologies, such as submarine cable.

Merah Putih, which was completed ahead of schedule, will replace Telkom-1, at 108 degrees East, where it will expand on Telkom's coverage to serve new markets. Its all C-band payload will enhance both internet and telephone service for populations in remote regions and offload backhaul for cellular service.

"Satellite plays a vital role in our telecommunications infrastructure," said Mr. Mr. Zulhelfi Abidin, Chief Technology Officer of Telkom. "SSL has been an excellent spacecraft supplier and has completed the satellite construction ahead of schedule. We look forward to traveling to Florida to see the satellite launch later this summer."

The Merah Putih (Telkom-4) #SpaceX (https://twitter.com/hashtag/SpaceX?src=hash) launch appears to have moved left (yes, left) to NET August 2nd. SpaceX has had to resubmit their FCC paperwork to accommodate the earlier launch date. They originally filed for a mission NET August 3rd.

The next SpaceX launch is the Falcon 9 (B1049.1) launch of "Merah Putih" (Telkom-4) from SLC-40 at the Cape on August 4 (two hours window opens 01:13 Eastern).

This schedule should place the Static Fire test as NET July 31.

We believe the Static Fire isn't today and could be Thursday. SpaceX (traditionally) never talk about the SF until after complete. Best practise is to visibly observe the flow - such as watching for rollout. Then you know it's close.

So Static Fire test Thursday (with allowance to go into Friday) - then launch next Tuesday.

Less than three months after SpaceX debuted its upgraded Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket, the company is set for an unexpectedly sudden inaugural reuse of the first highly reliable and reusable rocket to roll off of the Hawthorne, CA assembly line.

Falcon 9 booster 1046 (B1046) is now targeting 1:18 AM EDT, August 7 for its second launch.

Confirmed by visual observation of a sooty Block 5 booster vertical on Cape Canaveral's Pad 40, this reuse will be just two weeks away fr om beating SpaceX's booster turnaround record of 72 days.

On the ground to visually confirm plans for the historic reuse, Teslarati photographer Tom Cross also managed to capture an intriguing propellant loading and abort test, wh ere SpaceX appeared to intentionally abort a 'launch' attempt after rapidly loading a full complement of liquid oxygen (LOX) and rocket-grade kerosene (RP-1).

While not 100% clear why this testing was done today, an extensive understanding of Falcon 9 Block 5's behavior during propellant late-load and launch abort scenarios are both critical for the reliable operation of the upgraded rockets and invaluable for the first Crew Dragon launches later this year and early next, the latter with astronauts on board. With humans atop the rocket, a deep understanding of the vehicle's behavior during a wide range of off-nominal scenarios is more critical than ever, be it required by NASA or simply a side effect of due diligence on behalf of SpaceX.

A NEW ERA OF REUSABLE ROCKETS

Regardless, the main focus of this mission is to launch a payload for Indonesian operator PT Telkom Indonesia, in this case a ~5800 kg (12800 lb) geostationary communications satellite known as Merah Putih (formerly Telkom 4). On the SpaceX side of things, this mission is absolutely critical for the company's future – it will mark the (hopefully) successful inaugural reuse of a Falcon 9 Block 5 booster, the first of many dozens or even hundreds to come over the next several years if SpaceX's can make good on its aspirations.

While not immensely impressive in the sense that B1046's refurbishment took ~85 days to Block 4's record 72-day turnaround, that cursory conclusion is far from accurate. The record turnaround with Block 4 booster B1045 was essentially the culmination of more than a year of experience with nearly a dozen Block 3 and Block 4 Falcon 9 reuses. While that experience definitely transferred in part to SpaceX's first attempt at reusing Falcon 9 Block 5 (and especially so with the actual design of its reusability-focused upgrades), it's worth noting that the first reuses of Falcon 9s averaged booster turnaround times of 180-250 days, nearly double or triple the time between Block 5's first-ever launch and that same booster's first reflight.

Even still, B1046's debut launch, landing, and refurbishment were wholly unique considering that SpaceX – according to Elon Musk – conducted an extensive "teardown" analysis of the pathfinder rocket after it was transported from the drone ship back to one of the company's Cape Canaveral refurbishment facilities. It's very likely the case that that teardown was one of the most extensive SpaceX has done with a recovered rocket, couched on the fact that the company's future is wholly balanced on Falcon 9 Block 5's success and ease/efficiency of reusability.

That critical teardown process likely took anywhere from 30-60 days, if not simply as long as needed to do it right, after which the rocket was fully reassembled and transported to SpaceX's Launch Complex 40 (LC-40). Roughly eight days after it arrived at LC-40, B1046 rolled out to the pad's launch mount, went vertical, and completed a series of tests (including static fire) on Thursday (8/2) afternoon. The static fire was confirmed by a few observers, while Tom Cross captured the first unequivocal proof that the rocket is sooty (and thus B1046).

This moment may seem small on the scale of SpaceX's many towering achievements, but it will very likely become a fundamental keystone in the future history of affordable access to space.

Gearing up for the third Falcon 9 launch in less than two-and-a-half weeks, SpaceX fired up a rocket booster at Cape Canaveral on Thursday ahead of an early morning launch Tuesday with an Indonesian communications satellite.

Nine first stage engines on the Falcon 9 rocket ignited around 12:45 p.m. EDT (1645 GMT) Thursday at Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad, firing for several seconds before a shutdown command. SpaceX confirmed the static fire test in a tweet later Thursday afternoon.

The static fire test is a routine step in SpaceX's launch campaigns, during which the company's launch team oversees the loading of kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants into the Falcon 9 rocket before a brief hold-down engine firing. The test serves as a checkout of the launch vehicle and ground systems, and an exercise for the SpaceX launch team.

Ground crews will lower the Falcon 9 rocket and return it to a nearby hangar for attachment of the Merah Putih spacecraft this weekend. The launcher will roll back to the pad in advance of a two-hour launch window opening at 1:18 a.m. EDT (0518 GMT) Tuesday.

If the flight takes off on time, SpaceX's next launch will mark the third Falcon 9 flight in 16 days, one of the busiest periods of launch activity in the company's history. It will be the 15th launch by SpaceX so far this year.

Photos of the Falcon 9 launcher at Complex 40 taken Thursday showed soot markings suggesting the first stage was flown on a previous mission, likely in May on the launch of the Bangabandhu 1 communications satellite. That mission marked the inaugural flight of SpaceX's upgraded Falcon 9 Block 5 vehicle, sporting improvements to make the first stage easier to recover and reuse.

A SpaceX spokesperson did not respond to an inquiry about the identity of the Falcon 9 first stage set to fly with the Merah Putih satellite.

The Merah Putih satellite, formerly known as Telkom 4, will provide C-band telecommunications services over Indonesia and India. The new telecom craft was built by SSL in Palo Alto, California.

Officials renamed the satellite Merah Putih to represent the red and white of the Indonesian flag, according to SSL.

SSL completed construction of the Merah Putih satellite ahead of schedule, according to Telkom Indonesia, also known as PT Telkom. The new satellite will replace Telkom 1, which failed in a mysterious debris-shedding event in geostationary orbit last year.

Officials from Telkom Indonesia expected the Telkom 1 satellite, which launched in 1999, to remain operational until Merah Putih's launch. But Telkom 1's failure last year forced the operator to re-route communications traffic through other satellites.

The Merah Putih satellite is designed for a 16-year life, its owner said in a statement. The spacecraft will be positioned in geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator at 108 degrees east longitude.

"Satellite plays a vital role in our telecommunications infrastructure," said Zulhelfi Abidin, chief technology officer of Telkom Indonesia, in a press release earlier this year. "SSL has been an excellent spacecraft supplier and has completed the satellite construction ahead of schedule. We look forward to traveling to Florida to see the satellite launch later this summer."

Merah Putih carries 60 C-band transponders with coverage across the Indonesian archipelago, and other parts of South and Southeast Asia. The satellite will provide Internet, telephone and cellular backhaul services, according to SSL.

The launch will also keep intact a summertime streak of middle-of-the-night and early morning launches from Cape Canaveral. The last three Falcon 9 missions from Florida's Space Coast since early June have launched in the wee hours, and two more liftoffs are scheduled to occur in the middle of the night or predawn hours later this month.

Forecasters expect good weather on Florida's Space Coast for liftoff of a Falcon 9 rocket early Tuesday with an Indonesian communications satellite.

The two-hour launch window opens at 1:18 a.m. EDT (0518 GMT) Tuesday, and SpaceX ground crews plan to raise the 229-foot-tall (70-meter) Falcon 9 rocket vertical at Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad Monday for final countdown preparations.

The payload for Tuesday's mission is named Merah Putih, representing the red and white of the Indonesian flag. Previously known as Telkom 4, the Merah Putih satellite is owned by Telkom Indonesia and is heading for a perch in geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator.

SpaceX test-fired the rocket Thursday in a customary pre-launch static fire test, and the company has confirmed the launch Tuesday will reuse the first stage booster first flown May 11 on the maiden flight of the upgraded Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket.

The improved version of the Falcon 9 has now launched three times with upgraded first and second stages together on the same flight, but Tuesday's mission will be the first time a Block 5 first stage booster has been re-launched.

SpaceX recovered the first stage from the May 11 flight, which deployed Bangladesh's first communications satellite named Bangabandhu 1 into orbit, aboard a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

The upgrades to the Falcon 9 Block 5 include a beefed up heat shield, retractable landing legs and other modifications to make the first stage simpler to reuse, reducing the refurbishment needed between missions.

SpaceX intends to recover the reused stage again after Tuesday's launch. The company's drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You" is en route to a position a few hundred miles east of Cape Canaveral in the Atlantic Ocean, the targeted touchdown point for the first stage.

SpaceX was expected to conduct more invasive and time-consuming inspections on the first returned Block 5 booster, and three months after its first launch, the stage is ready to go again.

"We are going to be very rigourous in taking this rocket apart and confirming our design assumptions to be confident that it is indeed able to be reused without being taken apart," said Elon Musk, SpaceX's founder and CEO, during a conference call with reporters, referring to the first Block 5 booster. "Ironically, we need to take it apart to confirm that it does not need to be taken apart. So this rocket probably won't re-fly for a couple of months."

He said the Block 5's first stage booster is designed to fly 10 times "with no scheduled refurbishment." With "moderate scheduled maintenance," Block 5 first stages could be capable of 100 missions, Musk said.

Such reuse goals are crucial to SpaceX's long-term mission of reducing the cost of space transportation, with an aim to eventually launch a Falcon 9 rocket, recover the booster, and re-launch it within 24 hours, according to Musk, who said in May that could be accomplished as soon as next year.

Between 30 and 50 boosters for Falcon 9 Block 5 vehicles could be manufactured to meet customer demand, each flying multiple times, he said.

The turnaround between the Bangabandhu 1 and Merah Putih missions will not set a record for the shortest time between flights of the same Falcon 9 first stage. That distinction goes to an older-generation Block 4 booster, which launched April 18 and then again June 29 from Cape Canaveral, before SpaceX intentionally disposed of the rocket.

Block 4-generation Falcon 9 boosters could only be reused once.

After Thursday's static fire test, workers lowered the Falcon 9 rocket and rolled it back inside a nearby hangar for attachment of the Merah Putih satellite.

Forecasters from the U.S. Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron predict an 80 percent probability of acceptable weather during Tuesday's two-hour window.

Clear skies are expected in the overnight hours, and remnants of sea breeze thunderstorms should be west of the Space Coast at launch time.

"Monday night into early Tuesday morning, winds will remain easterly at the surface and northeasterly aloft," forecasters wrote in an outlook issued Sunday.

"Low to mid-levels will be relatively dry with minimal instability. These conditions paired with the lack of diurnal heating will contribute to primarily clear skies over the area," the forecast said. "The primary weather concerns will be any residual cumulus clouds or isolated showers pushing over the area from the Atlantic, and anvil clouds from convective activity near the Gulf Stream."

The forecast calls for a few clouds at 2,500 feet and a few clouds at 30,000 feet, light easterly winds at 8 to 10 mph, and a temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit at launch time.

If the launch gets delayed to Wednesday, there is a 70 percent probability of good weather as more moisture arrives in the area, raising the chances of thick clouds.

Fueling of the Falcon 9 rocket will begin at 12:43 a.m. EDT (0443 GMT), three minutes after the SpaceX launch team will be electronically polled for their "go" to proceed into the final countdown.

Super-chilled, densified kerosene and liquid oxygen will be simultaneously pumped into the Falcon 9's first stage beginning at T-minus 35 minutes. Liquid oxygen will begin flowing into the second stage at T-minus 16 minutes.

In the final 10 minutes of the countdown, an automatic sequencer will command the Falcon 9's first stage engines to be chilled in preparation for ignition, the rocket's navigation computer will be configured for flight, its upper stage engine will run through a steering profile, and the launch pad's strongback will be retracted around 1.5 degrees away from the rocket.

The beginning of the launch autosequence kicks off the first steps to begin pumping propellants into the 229-foot-tall Falcon 9 at Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad.

RP-1 kerosene and liquid oxygen are now being pumped into the Falcon 9 rocket. The liquid oxygen is chilled to near minus 340 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 206 degrees Celsius).

Today's mission will be the first re-flight of a Falcon 9 Block 5 first stage, an upgraded version of the Falcon 9 rocket featuring reliability and reusability enhancements.

SpaceX launched the first Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket May 11 with Bangladesh's first communications satellite. Officials heralded the successful debut as pivotal in allowing SpaceX to reduce the time and money needed to turn around a recovered booster for another mission.

On that mission, the first stage descended to a landing at sea on SpaceX's drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You."

SpaceX returned the booster to port for inspections before committing to re-fly the first stage on today's mission with the Merah Putih communications satellite for Telkom Indonesia, also known as PT Telkom.

The flight plan calls for the Falcon 9's second stage to fire its engine twice, then deploy the Merah Putih payload into an elliptical, egg-shaped transfer orbit with a low point a few hundred miles above Earth, and a high point ranging tens of thousands of miles in altitude.

The Falcon 9 Block 5 will give the communications satellite a high-altitude lift while its first stage still retains enough propellant to return to a SpaceX drone ship parked in the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred miles east of Cape Canaveral.

The improved Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 has now launched three times with upgraded first and second stages together on the same flight, but Tuesday's mission will be the first time a Block 5 first stage booster has been re-launched.

The upgrades to the Falcon 9 Block 5 include a beefed up heat shield, retractable landing legs and other modifications to make the first stage simpler to reuse, reducing the refurbishment needed between missions.

SpaceX intends to recover the reused stage again after Tuesday's launch. The company's drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You" is en route to a position a few hundred miles east of Cape Canaveral in the Atlantic Ocean, the targeted touchdown point for the first stage.

The roughly 12,800-pound (5,800 kilogram) Merah Putih satellite will provide C-band telecommunications services over Indonesia and India. The new telecom craft was built by SSL in Palo Alto, California.

SSL completed construction of the Merah Putih satellite ahead of schedule, according to Telkom Indonesia. The new satellite will replace Telkom 1, which failed in a mysterious debris-shedding event in geostationary orbit last year.

Officials from Telkom Indonesia expected the Telkom 1 satellite, which launched in 1999, to remain operational until Merah Putih's launch. But Telkom 1's failure last year forced the operator to re-route communications traffic through other satellites.

The Merah Putih satellite is designed for a 16-year life, its owner said in a statement. The spacecraft will be positioned in geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator at 108 degrees east longitude.

Based on SSL's 1300-series satellite platform, Merah Putih carries 60 C-band transponders with coverage across the Indonesian archipelago, and other parts of South and Southeast Asia. The satellite will provide Internet, telephone and cellular backhaul services, according to SSL.

MERAH PUTIH MISSION

On Tuesday, August 7th at 1:18 a.m. EDT, Falcon 9 successfully lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida carrying the Merah Putih mission for PT Telkom Indonesia. The satellite was deployed approximately 32 minutes after liftoff into its targeted Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO).

Following stage separation, Falcon 9's first stage, which previously flew on the first Block 5 mission in May 2018, successfully landed on SpaceX's "Of Course I Still Love You" droneship stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

Keeping up a run of middle-of-the-night launches from Cape Canaveral, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket powered by a recycled first stage booster climbed into orbit early Tuesday with the Indonesian Merah Putih communications satellite.

The Falcon 9's first stage dropped out of the night sky a few minutes later over the Atlantic Ocean, descending to a pinpoint landing on SpaceX's drone ship "Of Course I Still Love" parked a few hundred miles east of Cape Canaveral.

The up-and-down journey was the second such trip for the same Falcon 9 booster, which debuted May 11 with the successful launch of Bangladesh's first communications satellite. The first stage was also the first of SpaceX's upgraded line of "Falcon 9 Block 5" rockets, featuring improvements to make the vehicles more reliable and easier to reuse.

Tuesday's mission with the Merah Putih communications satellite, owned by Telkom Indonesia, was the first time SpaceX has re-flown a Block 5 booster.

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) rocket took off from Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad at 1:18 a.m. EDT (0518 GMT), turned toward the east and broke the sound barrier within about one minute.

Riding 1.7 million pounds of thrust from nine Merlin main engines, the Falcon 9 rocket soared into the stratosphere, then its first stage detached around two-and-a-half minutes after liftoff.

The first stage pulsed cold gas nitrogen thrusters to ready for its descent, while the Falcon 9's second stage — powered by a single Merlin engine — ignited for the first of two burns to send the Merah Putih satellite into an egg-shaped geostationary transfer orbit.

With the aid of grid fins, rocket thrust and four landing legs, the first stage touched down on SpaceX's landing barge around eight minutes into the mission.

"All stations, this is recovery, Falcon 9 has landed," radioed a member of SpaceX's launch and landing team.

Around the same time, the Falcon 9's upper stage shut down and entered a preliminary orbit before a nearly 20-minute coast across the Atlantic.

The Merlin upper stage engine reignited for a nearly minute-long firing at 1:44 a.m. EDT (0544 GMT), giving the Merah Putih satellite enough velocity to climb into a geostationary transfer orbit with a low point a few hundred miles above Earth, and a high point expected to reach tens of thousands of miles in altitude.

Pre-programmed commands gently nudged the satellite away from the rocket at the mission's 32-minute mark, and live views from the Falcon 9 rocket showed the Merah Putih spacecraft separating from the Falcon 9's second stage over Africa.

Tuesday's launch was the third SpaceX mission in 16 days, and the company's 15th launch of the year overall. It was also the 28th time SpaceX has recovered one of its first stage boosters intact, and the 15th re-flight of a Falcon first stage.

But it was the first time SpaceX demonstrated reuse of a Block 5-generation booster, which the company plans to be its workhorse in the coming years, until a new, super-powerful rocket dubbed the BFR is ready for service.

The upgrades to the Falcon 9 Block 5 include a beefed up heat shield, retractable landing legs and other modifications to make the first stage simpler to reuse, reducing the refurbishment needed between missions.

SpaceX was expected to conduct more invasive and time-consuming inspections on the first returned Block 5 booster, and three months after its first launch, the stage is ready to go again.

"We are going to be very rigourous in taking this rocket apart and confirming our design assumptions to be confident that it is indeed able to be reused without being taken apart," said Elon Musk, SpaceX's founder and CEO, during a conference call with reporters, referring to the first Block 5 booster. "Ironically, we need to take it apart to confirm that it does not need to be taken apart. So this rocket probably won't re-fly for a couple of months."

He said the Block 5's first stage booster is designed to fly 10 times "with no scheduled refurbishment." With "moderate scheduled maintenance," Block 5 first stages could be capable of 100 missions, Musk said.

Such reuse goals are crucial to SpaceX's long-term mission of reducing the cost of space transportation, with an aim to eventually launch a Falcon 9 rocket, recover the booster, and re-launch it within 24 hours, according to Musk, who said in May that could be accomplished as soon as next year.

Between 30 and 50 boosters for Falcon 9 Block 5 vehicles could be manufactured to meet customer demand, each flying multiple times, he said.

The turnaround between the Bangabandhu 1 and Merah Putih missions did not set a record for the shortest time between flights of the same Falcon 9 first stage. That distinction goes to an older-generation Block 4 booster, which launched April 18 and then again June 29 from Cape Canaveral, before SpaceX intentionally disposed of the rocket.

Block 4-generation Falcon 9 boosters could only be reused once.

Merah Putih's on-board engine will circularize its orbit over the equator in the coming weeks.

"Satellite plays a vital role in our telecommunications infrastructure," said Zulhelfi Abidin, chief technology officer of Telkom Indonesia, in a press release earlier this year. "SSL has been an excellent spacecraft supplier and has completed the satellite construction ahead of schedule. We look forward to traveling to Florida to see the satellite launch later this summer."

Tuesday's flight came 16 days after an early morning Falcon 9 launch July 22 that sent the Telstar 19 VANTAGE communications satellite into orbit for Telesat. Another predawn Falcon 9 flight from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on July 25 delivered 10 Iridium voice and data relay payloads to orbit.

The next launch from Cape Canaveral is scheduled for Saturday at 3:33 a.m. EDT (0733 GMT), when a United Launch Alliance Delta 4-Heavy rocket is set to loft NASA's Parker Solar Probe on a seven-year mission to fly through the sun's corona.

A flight readiness review Monday approved the continuation of final launch preps for Parker Solar Probe, which will fly closer to the sun than any previous mission.

SpaceX's next mission is set for launch no earlier than Aug. 23 with the Telstar 18 VANTAGE communications satellite to provide broadcast, enterprise and government communications services over parts of India, China, Mongolia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Ocean region.

APT Satellite of Hong Kong has an agreement to use capacity on Telstar 18 VANTAGE, which is also known as Apstar 5C.

If launch remains set for Aug. 23, liftoff is scheduled for a window opening at 11:33 p.m. EDT (0333 GMT on Aug. 24).

SpaceX has successfully reused the first Falcon 9 Block 5 booster less than three months after the rocket's major reliability and reusability upgrade debuted. This milestone may feel small in the shadow of SpaceX's accomplishments over the last ~18 months but make no mistake: the second flight of a Block 5 booster is by far the company's most significant achievement in recent years.

First and foremost, this is by no means meant to demean the awe-inspiring reality of what SpaceX has managed over the last several years, which includes the first successful Falcon 9 landing, the first commercial orbital-class rocket reuse (also Falcon 9), and the first commercial reuse of an orbital spacecraft (Cargo Dragon), and many others. Rather, it really is the case that the first Block 5 reuse is one of the most important things ever done by SpaceX.

WHY IS THIS LAUNCH SO SIGNIFICANT?

As noted by webcast host and engineer Lauren Lyons, the second successful drone ship recovery of Falcon 9 Booster 1046 (B1046) paves the way for the SpaceX's first-ever third launch of the same rocket. The number "3" may not immediately feel significant, but in the case of Falcon 9, the third reuse of a booster has always remained out of reach for older versions of the rocket, walled off by the exponentially greater cost and effort required to refurbish non-Block 5 rockets after their first reuse. Block 5 is different, and that's by design.

Put very simply Falcon 9 Block 5 is an iteration of the venerable launch vehicle that best represents SpaceX moving from reusable rockets as experimental prototypes to a successfully developed and implemented technology – with Block 5, SpaceX is effectively proclaiming that Falcon 9's reusability design has been completed and optimized thanks to dozens of rocket landings (28) and reuses (15).

With the third reuse now explicitly on the table for B1046 "later this year", Falcon 9 has broken a two-launch ceiling that long loomed over its older predecessors. The third reuse will pave the way for the 4th, 5th, 10th, 50th ... reflight of individual Falcon 9 boosters, an absolutely integral requirement for SpaceX to achieve its ultimate goals of sustainably colonizing the solar system – starting with Mars – and thus 'backing up' humanity.

Как это не тянет? Telstar-19V Как раз получается около 6 т на ГПО-1800 (и 7 т на старте).

Две тонны сухой массы? Протоша легко закинет это прямо на ГСО. С 51-й параллели. Даже в медиум-версии. Ещё и на топливо останется.
 Такое даже Ангара с полярного круга вытянет. Только с топливом будут проблемы, прийдётся ЭРД ставить.  :)

Satellites are uniquely positioned to provide cost-effective and reliable service in regions such as South East Asia where the geographies can make fiber optic and terrestrial infrastructures difficult to build. The Telkom network demonstrates how satellite can seamlessly integrate into the greater telecommunications infrastructure to bring information and communications to underserved populations.

Merah Putih, which will be located at 108 degrees East longitude, is an all C-band satellite that enhances both internet and telephone service for populations in remote regions and will be used to offload backhaul for cellular service.

With a launch mass of roughly 5800 kg, the satellite incorporates many technology advances including SSL's composite strut tower, which is built using 3D printed components. It has 24 C-band transponders and 12 transponders for Extended C-band covering South East Asia, 24 C-band transponders covering South Asia. Today's advances lower the cost of satellite capacity and enable better performance and reliability.

"SSL worked closely with the Telkom team to be sure to meet all of our requirements," said Mr. Alex J Sinaga, President Director of Telkom Indonesia. "We are very happy that the satellite was completed ahead of schedule and now that it is launched, we can expand our service into new regions."

Merah Putih is based on the powerful and reliable SSL 1300 platform, which provides flexibility for a broad range of applications and technology advances. It is designed to provide service for 16 years or more.

Cape Caneveral, Florida, 7 August 2018 – State-owned telecommunications company PT Telkom Indonesia (Telkom) has launched its Merah Putih satellite from Cape Canaveral, Florida on Tuesday, 7 August 2018 at 12.18 Western Indonesia Time.

The successful launch marks Telkom's 42 years in the business and in operating telecommunications satellitre for Indonesia, which also coincides wtih the 73rd anniversary of Indonesia's independence.

"We thank God the Almighty, and with the support and prayers from the Indonesian government and people, the Merah Putih satellite was launched today," President Director of Telkom Alex J Sinaga shortly after the launch at SLC 40, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
 
The Merah Putih satellite has a capacity of 60 active transponders, consisting of 24 C-band transponders and 12 extended C-band transponders that cover South Asia. The satellite will be stationed in the orbit slot 108 degrees east longitude or approximately above the Karimata Straits region.
 
The Merah Putih satellite is an addition to a fleet of two active satellites that Telkom owns, namely Telkom-2 and Telkom 3S. It will increase the number of Telkom's transponders from 73 to 133 transponders and strengthen TelkomGroup's satellite business.
 
The Merah Putih satellite has a bigger capacity and wider coverage compared to other Telkom's satellites. It also uses the Fiber Optic Gyro technology which enables it to have higher stability.
 
The satellite was manufactured by an American satellite and spacecraft company, Space Systems Loral (SSL) factory based in Palo Alto, California. It was developed since the beginning of 2016 and was launched into orbit piggybacking on Falcon-9 flight-proven rocket owned by SpaceX, an American aerospace transportation firm that has 98 percent success launching rate.

The successful launch of Merah Putih satellite is expected to be able to meet the demand for national transporders, considering that satellite is a complementary infrastructure needed to cover areas with topographycal characteristisc such as the Indonesian archipelago. The satellite will play an important role to provide broadband communication services in areas that fiber optics or other communications system are unable to reach, especially on most frontier, outermost and remote areas.
 
"The Merah Putih satellite covers throughout the Indonesian territorry and Southeast and South Asian regions. With this satellite, we expect to be able to reduce the digital divide in Indonesia and strengthen TelkomGroup's international business, so that TelkomGroup could become Indonesia's most advanced digital telcommunications company that can compete globally," Alex said.
 
"The satellite is also expected to boost the development of Indonesia's digital society and boost Telkom's role as an enabler in the development of national digital economy. This is in accordance with the government's goal to make Indonesia as Southeast Asia's biggest digital economy," Alex said.
