The GSAT-9 is being launched with an objective to provide different communication applications in Ku-band with coverage over South Asian countries, the ISRO stated. On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the South Asia Satellite, will go a long way in addressing the region's economic and developmental priorities.

"The capacities of this satellite and the facilities it provides will go a long way in addressing South Asia's economic and developmental priorities," he said in his monthly radio address 'Mann Ki Baat'. "Natural resources mapping, telemedicine, the field of education, deeper IT connectivity or fostering people-to-people contact, this satellite will prove to be a boon in the progress of the entire region." "It is an important step by India to enhance cooperation with the entire South Asia...It is an invaluable gift. This is an appropriate example of our commitment towards South Asia. I welcome all the South Asian countries who have joined us on this momentous endeavour," he had said.

The space agency said that the GSAT-9 is configured around the ISRO's standard I-2K bus, with a lift-off mass of 2,230 kg, and the satellite's main structure is cuboid in shape built around a central cylinder with a mission life of more than 12 years. According to an official, ISRO on experimental basis decided to have electric power for the satellite. ALSO READ: ISRO's solar hybrid electric car completes successful test drive

"We have not reduced the volume of the traditional on-board fuel because of the electric power. We have added electric power facility to check its performance for use in future satellites," the official told IANS. He said the next satellite with electric power will be the GSAT-20 slated for launch next year.

Meanwhile, the ISRO is also gearing up to launch its heaviest rocket GSLV-Mk III later this month.

ISRO has been unusually reticent about its launch from Sriharikota today

A communication spacecraft, the South Asia Satellite, which will serve India and six of its regional neighbours, is se t to lift off from Sriharikota off Andhra Pradesh on Friday evening.

Some bare information on this regional diplomatic overture apart, mystery shrouded the civil mission until late on the eve of the launch. The 2230-kg spacecraft will be launched on a GSLV, the Indian Space Research Organisation's medium-lift rocket, numbered F09.

A normally transparent ISRO has been unusually reticent about a less than routine launch. The time of the launch has a cryptic clue - one must infer it as 4.57 p.m. from the duration of the countdown. There will be no live telecast. Brochures that would be routinely released about five days ahead of a mission are still to be uploaded on the ISRO website.
Спойлер
Mediapersons will not cover a launch for the first time in a decade; normally ISRO would ferry about 200 reporters from different places to Sriharikota to witness a launch. This would be the fourth time in the history of Indian space launches, recalled T.S. Subramanian, veteran journalist with The Hindu's group publication, Frontline, who writes on Space and Defence and who has not missed an ISRO launch since 1980.

Among the three earlier exceptions was the launch of of Israel's spy satellite, TecSAR, on a PSLV in January 2008.

ISRO functionaries said, "This is our mandate. We don't know much about all this, either."

GSAT-9 was planned years ahead to augment Internet broadband and DTH activities within the country.

It is not known if Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who offered the spacecraft for the region, or dignitaries from those nations will witness the launch.

This much is known: a 28-hour countdown began for the GSLV mission at 12.57 p.m. on Thursday, along with other pre-launch activities, according to the space agency's one-liner put out in the afternoon.

GSLV-F09 is slated to take off with the 2,230-kg satellite at 4.57 p.m. on Friday.

The communication spacecraft carries 12 Ku-band transponders that can drive telecommunication, disaster management, broadcasting and direct to home TV, Internet activities, tele-education and telemedicine across the region.

India is gearing up for the country's second orbital space launch of the year on Friday, involving a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mk.II delivering the GSAT-9 communications satellite to orbit to support television distribution over India and other Asian countries as well as augmenting space-based navigation data to allow aircraft to more accurately navigate through Indian airspace.

GSLV Mk.II is targeting liftoff at 11:27 UTC on Friday fr om the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Center on India's east coast. Firing up its powerful solid-fueled core stage and four liquid boosters, GSLV will be headed to the south east to reach an elliptical Geostationary Transfer Orbit after firing its hypergolic second stage and cryogenic third stage to send the 2,230-Kilogram satellite on its way around 17 minutes after liftoff.

Friday's mission will be focused on the GSAT-9 satellite, also known as South Asia Sat. Built by ISRO based on the I-2K satellite platform, the spacecraft hosts twelve Ku-Band transponders that will deliver TV services over India and members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). The satellite also carries India's fourth GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) payload that delivers correction signals for aircraft navigation systems to increase navigation accuracy to three meters, assisting in air traffic management and landing in tough weather and challenging terrain.

GSAT-9 weighs in at 2,230 Kilograms and can therefore not be lifted by the PSLV rocket that maxes out at 1,500kg to a sub-GTO orbit. The satellite hosts a hybrid propulsion system relying on chemical propulsion for its climb into geostationary orbit and utilizing Xenon ion thrusters for stationkeeping in its GEO position at 48° East, validating the use of electric propulsion for future missions including all-electric satellites planned for launch in the coming years.

The 49-meter tall GSLV rocket was rolled from its assembly building to the Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan this week and a clean Mission Readiness Review cleared the vehicle to enter a 28-hour launch countdown that begins with filling the vehicle's boosters and second stage with storable propellants, UH25 Hydrazine and Nitrogen Tetroxide. Tanking on the upper stage occurs in the final hours of the countdown since the cryogenics have to be constantly replenished due to natural boil-off.

GSLV will come to life five seconds prior to liftoff when its four boosters are commanded to ignite followed by the ignition of the Core Stage to lift the rocket off the ground with a total thrust of 800 metric-ton-force.

Heading east across the Indian Ocean, GSLV's core stage will burn out after a minute and 46 seconds followed by the burnout of the boosters at T+2:29 when the rocket will already be 70 Kilometers in altitude, traveling 2.4 Kilometers per second. Stage separation between the solid-fueled core and the second stage occurs split seconds after booster shutdown using flexible linear shaped charges allowing the spent first stage and boosters to be pushed away by the exhaust of the second stage that ignites its engine at the moment of staging.

Image: ISRO

The protective payload fairing will separate shy of four minutes into the flight when the vehicle will have reached 115 Kilometers in altitude wh ere aerodynamic forces are no longer a threat to the delicate satellites structure.

Second stage shutdown comes at T+4:49 followed by stage separation 3.5 seconds later and Cryogenic Upper Stage ignition one second after that. India's cryogenic stage begins its burn in high-thrust mode providing 9,500kgf of thrust before reducing thrust to 7,500kgf for the remainder of the burn. The third stage will be up and running for nearly 12 minutes, accelerating the vehicle by close to 5 Kilometers per second to accomplish the GTO injection, targeting an orbit peaking at nearly 36,000 Kilometers in altitude.

GSAT-9 will be sent on its way just after passing T+17 minutes, tasked with deploying its solar arrays and contacting ground stations to be transferred to nominal mission mode ahead of a series of engine firings to maneuver into Geostationary Orbit for a service life of at least 12 years.

GSLV Successfully Launches South Asia Satellite
India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F09) successfully launched the 2230 kg South |Asia Satellite (GSAT-9)  into its planned Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) today (May 05, 2017). Today's launch of GSLV was its eleventh and took place from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR (SDSC SHAR), Sriharikota, the spaceport of India. This is the fourth consecutive success achieved by GSLV carrying indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage. In its oval shaped GTO, the South Asia Satellite is now orbiting the Earth with a perigee (nearest point to Earth) of 169 km and an apogee (farthest point to Earth) of 36,105 km with an orbital inclination of 20.65 deg with respect to the equator.

Few seconds before the launch countdown reached zero, the four liquid propellant strap-on motors of GSLV-F09, each carrying 42 tons of liquid propellants, were ignited. At count zero and after confirming the normal performance of all the four strap-on motors, the 139 ton solid propellant first stage core motor was ignited and GSLV lifted off at 16:57 IST. The major phases of the flight occurred as scheduled. About seventeen minutes after lift-off, South Asia Satellite was successfully placed in GTO.

Soon after separation from GSLV, the two solar arrays of the satellite were automatically deployed in quick succession and the Master Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan in Karnataka assumed control of the satellite.

South Asia Satellite is a communication satellite built by ISRO to provide a variety of communication services over the South Asian region.  For this, it is equipped with Ku-band transponders.

Following the successful launch, the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi addressed along with the South Asian leaders. He congratulated ISRO and remarked that today was a historic day for South Asia and a day without precedence. The Prime Minister recalled that two years ago India made a promise to extend the advanced space technology for the cause of growth and prosperity of the people of South Asia and felt that the successful launch of South Asia Satellite today marks a fulfilment of that.

In the coming days, the satellite orbit will be raised from its present GTO to the final circular Geostationary Orbit (GSO) by firing the satellite's Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) in stages. The South Asia Satellite will be commissioned into service after the completion of orbit raising operations and the satellite's positioning in its designated slot in the GSO following in-orbit testing of its payloads.

External ground delays holding up GSAT-9 benefits

ЦитироватьSome five months after the South Asia Satellite or GSAT-9 was put up in space as New Delhi's gift to six neighbours, ground delays outside India seem to be holding up its planned harvest.

Спойлер
The Indian Space Research Organisation, which owns and operates the roughly ₹200-crore communication spacecraft, says it has initiated the processes to set up ground stations for the partners to receiver/send satellite communication. It has invited expressions of interest to find suitable Indian industry players who will set up the ground equipment.

While half of the satellite's 12 Ku-band transponders is reserved for the partners, the Indian part has been in use without a hitch.

A.S. Kiran Kumar, ISRO Chairman, told The Hindu, "It is work in progress. We are now trying to get the partner governments to start using the services of the satellite. They must first set up the ground segment depending on what they need." The satellite has a planned life of 12 years.

It would be a slow build-up as work must be coordinated with each of the six governments. "We are trying to push it as much as possible but it does not move at the pace that we would like. Eventually we will support them through Indian industry," said Mr. Kiran Kumar, who is also Secretary, Department of Space, that functions under the Prime Minister.

In India, which has a 50-year active space history, satcom-based activities can routinely kick in a couple of months after a communications satellite is launched. But for the smaller neighbours, space is a relatively new area.

The Indian space hug wraps Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Their satellite-based services are said to be small and some may be using commercial foreign satellites.

Speed in Bhutan

In the case of Bhutan, Mr. Kiran Kumar said there had been significant progress and many interactions, because of which "We are going ahead" faster than with the others.

To begin with, ISRO has enabled video transmission uplinked from India. Once the countries start using their part of satellite fully, he said it could open or spur activities for poor and unconnected areas — tele-education and tele-medicine or consultations with doctors; besides a SAARC library link of regionally relevant information.

India has offered each country one Ku-band transponder free of cost along with services. The gesture is meant to spread the use of DTH television and VSATs to support Internet-based applications.

The South Asia Satellite was first announced by the Prime Minister in 2014. India itself has been grappling with an old shortage of Ku-band transponders — because of which Indian DTH operators lease their capacity on private foreign satellites.

Asked about it, Mr. Kiran Kumar said sharing amidst scarcity was a generous act for the larger good.
