NASA's Thomas Zurbuchen: we never take Mars for granted. Mars is hard.

InSight project manager Tom Hoffman says he'll control his excitement until first notification that the spacecraft has landed, then he will "unleash my inner four-year-old."

29 мин. назад

Hoffman: about 11 miles off from center of desired landing site. Decided at 6am PST this morning to perform final trajectory correction maneuver, which will take place a few hours from now.

24 мин. назад

Hoffman: landing site, called Elysium Plantia, roughly translates as "Heavenly Plain" and is indeed very plain; not the most exciting place to be, but very safe for landing.

Bruce Banerdt, InSight principal investigator: landing tomorrow feels like a climax but it's actually the beginning of our science mission.

Banerdt giving an overview of the seismometer on InSight, one of its key instruments (and which, because of development problems, delayed the mission's launch from 2016.)

Hoffman: I'm completely excited and completely nervous at the same time. Everything makes us feel confortbale about the landing, but everything has to go right.

Banerdt notes he's been working on a mission like InSight for 25-30 years; was a grad student who was JPL for the Viking landings and "really disappointed" when its seismic instruments didn't work.

Hoffman: final TCM this afternoon will be just a few cm/sec change in velocity, moving the center of the landing ellipse about 11 miles.

Hoffman: if we don't get the X-band "beep" from InSight seven minutes after landing, all is not lost; could mean the spacecraft is in safe mode.
