Launch preparations with Soyuz, Ariane 5 and Vega keep Arianespace on track for 12 missions in 2017

Arianespace's objective of performing 12 launches in 2017 is backed by a high level of activity at the Spaceport in French Guiana, where mission preparations, payload checkout and launch vehicle hardware are in process for upcoming flights with Soyuz, Ariane 5 and Vega.

The basic three-stage Soyuz launcher for Flight VS17 is raised into position in the ELS launch zone, where it was fitted with the SES-15 payload and Fregat upper stage.

For the company's next liftoff, a medium-lift Soyuz is now in the Spaceport's ELS launch zone, fitted with its SES-15 telecommunications satellite payload. Undergoing the countdown for a morning departure on Thursday, May 18, this launch is designated Flight VS17 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – signifying the 17th mission with the Russian-built workhorse vehicle since it entered service at the Spaceport in 2011.

Elsewhere at the Spaceport, the next Ariane 5 has moved fr om the Launcher Integration Building to the Final Assembly Building, wh ere a dual payload of the Viasat-2 and Eutelsat E172B telecommunications satellites will be integrated. This mission is designated Flight VA237, denoting the 237th flight with an Ariane launcher since the family of European-built vehicles began Spaceport operations in 1979.

Activity also has begun for the subsequent Ariane 5 launch, VA238, which will loft the Hellas-Sat 3/Inmarsat S relay satellite and the GSAT-17 telecommunications spacecraft for the Indian Space Research Organisation.

GSAT-17 arrived in French Guiana this week aboard a chartered cargo jetliner that landed at Cayenne's Félix Eboué Airport. Separately, elements for Flight VA238's Ariane 5 launch vehicle were delivered to Kourou's Pariacabo port by the MN Toucan roll-on/roll-off transport ship, completing a trans-Atlantic sea voyage that also carried launcher components for Arianespace's next Vega mission.

Vega assembly activity for Arianespace's Flight VV10 is highlighted in these images from the Spaceport, beginning with the P80 first stage's positioning at the SLV launch site (photo at left). The Zefiro 23 second stage was then installed atop the P80 first stage (center photo), followed by integration of the Zefiro 9 third stage (at right) and the AVUM (not shown).

The lightweight Vega launcher for Arianespace's upcoming mission is undergoing final checkout in French Guiana, readying it to receive a dual payload of Earth observation satellites – consisting of OPTSAT-3000 (as the upper passenger) and Venµs (in the lower passenger position).

Vega was integrated at the Spaceport's SLV launch site, bringing together the solid propellant P80 first stage, Zefiro 23 second stage and Zefiro 9 third stage; followed by the liquid bipropellant fourth stage, called the AVUM (Attitude and Vernier Upper Module).

The August 1 mission is designated Flight VV10 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, and it will mark Vega's 10th launch since the 2012 start-up of operations with this vehicle – all of which were successfully performed from French Guiana.
Спойлер
As the smallest member in Arianespace's launcher family operated at the Spaceport, Vega complements the company's medium-lift Soyuz and heavyweight Ariane 5 in offering a full range of launch service capabilities.

A pair of passengers for Vega
Both satellite passengers on Flight VV10 – Venµs, developed in a joint project of the Israel Space Agency (ISA) and the French CNES space agency; along with OPTSAT-3000 for the Italian Ministry of Defense – will be delivered by Vega to Sun-synchronous orbits.

OPTSAT-3000 and Venµs (left and right, respectively) are shown during their separate checkout processes, both of which were performed inside the Spaceport's S1 payload preparation facility.

Venµs (for Vegetation and Environment monitoring on a New MicroSatellite) is designed to provide close-up and regular monitoring of vegetation on Earth's surface. By observing plant growth and health status, the spacecraft will help scientists to determine the impacts of environmental factors, human activities and climate change on Earth's land surfaces.

To fulfil its scientific objectives, Venµs will acquire frequent, high-resolution, multi-spectral images of over 100 sites of interest around the world. Capturing these images will be this spacecraft's super-spectral camera, which is characterized by 12 narrow spectral bands ranging from 415 nm to 910 nm.

Both Vega payloads were built by Israel Aerospace Industries
As the first Israeli-made satellite created for environmental research purposes, Venµs was built by Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI) Space Division in collaboration with Elbit, which developed the telescope, and Raphael, providing the propulsion system. The camera was supplied by CNES.

The liftoff mass of Venµs is set at 264 kg. Its scientific mission will be followed by a technological mission at a lowered altitude, which will gauge the performance of IAI-developed Hall-effect thruster technology to counter a satellite's orbital decay caused by atmospheric drag.

Flight VV10's other passenger, the OPTSAT-3000 Earth observation satellite, will enable national defense entities to acquire and use high-resolution images from any part of the globe.

The OPTSAT-3000 system was supplied by Telespazio as prime contractor, with responsibility for supply of the entire system: from the satellite to the ground segment, launch and early operation services, the preparation and execution of operations and logistics, through to in-orbit tests and commissioning.

The satellite was built by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), chosen by the Italian Ministry of Defence based on inter-governmental Italian-Israeli agreements. OHB Italy is responsible for the launch services and related engineering support.

OPTSAT-3000 will have a liftoff mass set at 368 kg. and a design life of seven years.

July 18, 2017 (https://spaceflightnow.com/2017/07/) Stephen Clark (https://spaceflightnow.com/author/stephen-clark/)

A solid-fueled Vega rocket has been stacked on a launch pad in French Guiana for liftoff Aug. 1 with two Israeli-built satellites — one developed in partnership with the French space agency for environmental research, and another to gather intelligence for the Italian military.

The late-night blastoff Aug. 1 will be the 10th flight of a Vega rocket, an Italian-led project crafted to haul small satellites into orbits several hundred miles above Earth.

Built by a European industrial consortium led by Avio, an Italian aerospace contractor, the Vega booster has found a niche carrying lightweight Earth-viewing satellites into orbit, particularly spacecraft with a European connection.

All nine Vega flights to date have been successful, lofting payloads into space for the European Space Agency, the European Commission's Copernicus environmental network, the governments of Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Peru and Turkey, and Terra Bella, a U.S.-based Earth-imaging company backed by Google that was since acquired by Planet.

The satellite passengers slated to ride the 10th Vega rocket into orbit are Venµs, a 582-pound (264-kilogram) spacecraft designed to monitor plant growth, and Optsat 3000, a sharp-eyed 811-pound (368-kilogram) reconnaissance satellite fitted with an optical telescope looking down on Earth.

Optsat 3000 will ride in the upper position inside the Vega's Swiss-made payload fairing, and Venµs will launch in the rocket's lower payload berth. Both satellites were manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries.

Liftoff is set for 10:58:33 p.m. French Guiana time Aug. 1 (9:58:33 p.m. EDT; 0158:33 GMT on Aug. 2). After a boost into space by the Vega's three lower Italian-made solid motors, a liquid-fueled upper stage engine sourced from Ukraine will steer the Optsat 3000 and Venµs satellites into sun-synchronous polar orbits several hundred miles above Earth.

Optsat 3000, the bigger of the mission's two passengers, will separate from the launcher first around 42 minutes after liftoff. The Venµs spacecraft will deploy from the Vega rocket's upper stage around T+plus 1 hour, 37 minutes.

Italy's first optical surveillance satellite, joining a fleet of Italian radar imaging craft already in orbit. The $182 million satellite, designed for a lifetime of at least six years, carries a Jupiter remote sensing camera provided by Israel-based Elbit Systems Ltd. capable of resolving objects on the ground smaller than a half-meter (20 inches).

The Italian Ministry of Defense ordered the Optsat 3000 satellite from Israel Aerospace Industries as part of a reciprocal contract arrangement, in exchange for the Israeli military's purchase of Italian-made jet trainers.

Telespazio acts as prime contractor for the Optsat 3000 program, and OHB Italy reserved the satellite's launch on a Vega rocket with Arianespace.

The Venµs spacecraft is setting off on a dual scientific and technology demonstration mission.

Fitted with a French-supplied "super-spectral" color camera sensitive in 12 bands ranging from blue to near-infrared, Venµs will take pictures of vegetation, glaciers, coastlines and other features from a perch 447 miles (720 kilometers) above Earth.

Scientists will point Venµs's camera toward more than 100 pre-identified areas of interest in forests, croplands and nature reserves around the world, according to CNES, the French space agency. No other satellite currently in orbit can survey the same locations with the resolution and frequency of the Venµs mission, a benefit gained at the expense of global coverage, officials said.

Researchers will track plant growth, snow cover, glacial movements, and sediments in coastal estuaries with the Venµs satellite. Scientists will analyze the mission's data output to study how environmental and human factors influence vegetation health.

The Venµs project is a partnership between CNES and the Israel Space Agency. Besides the satellite's primary camera, France is in charge of the mission's science data center and other ground systems. Israeli engineers built the satellite, the camera's telescope and a experimental plasma thruster to be tested in the second phase of the Venµs mission.

After a two-and-a-half-year Earth observation campaign, Venµs's altitude will be lowered to approximately 250 miles (410 kilometers) to test the low-power electric thruster's ability to counteract the effect of atmospheric drag and maintain the satellite's orbit.

Flight VV10: Vega to launch two Earth Observation Satellites for Italy, Israel and France

For its eighth launch of the year, and the 10th Vega mission since this launcher began its career at the Guiana Space Center in 2012, Arianespace will orbit two Earth observation satellites for civil and military applications: OPTSAT-3000 for the Italian Ministry of Defence; and Venµs, a mission of the Israel Space Agency (ISA) – a government body sponsored by the country's Ministry of Science & Technology – and the French CNES space agency (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales).

This marks the seventh Earth observation mission for the versatile Vega launch vehicle.

The launch will be performed from the Vega Launch Complex (ZLV) in Kourou, French Guiana.

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Monday, July 31, 2017 in Kourou, to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.
Спойлер
OPTSAT-3000 is an Earth observation program for the Italian Ministry of Defense. It comprises a high-resolution optical satellite and a ground segment for in-orbit control, mission planning and the acquisition and processing of images.

OPTSAT-3000 will allow national defense entities to acquire and use high-resolution images from any part of the globe. The OPTSAT-3000 system will be interoperable with Italy's second-generation COSMO-SkyMed radar satellites. This will give the Italian Defense Ministry access to state-of-the-art technology, and ensure maximum operational capabilities because of the combined optical and radar data offered by the two systems.

The OPTSAT-3000 system is supplied by prime contractor Telespazio, a joint venture between Leonardo (67%) and Thales (33%). Telespazio is responsible for the entire system, including the satellite, ground segment, launch and early orbital operations, preparation and execution of operations and logistics, in-orbit tests and commissioning.

The satellite and ground control systems were built by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), chosen by the Italian Ministry of Defense on the basis of an inter-governmental agreement between Italy and Israel. OHB Italia is responsible for the launch services and related engineering support.

OPTSAT-3000 is a three-axis stabilized satellite, highly autonomous and combining reduced weight, low power consumption and high reliability.

Venμs is an Earth observation and exploratory mission of the Israel Space Agency (ISA) – a government body sponsored by the country's Ministry of Science & Technology – and the French CNES space agency (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales).

While the satellite's designation may sound like the name of a planet, it actually is the acronym for: Vegetation and Environment monitoring on a New Micro Satellite. By analyzing and comparing images taken from the same location, researchers will be able to assess the state of the soil, understand how vegetation is developing, and detect the spreading of disease or contamination in the field.

The satellite will image vast areas around the globe and provide dozens of images every day, each of them covering approximately 760 square kilometers. Venμs will fly in a Sun-synchronous, near-polar orbit – which enables its return to view each area around the world, exactly at the same time and under the same imagery conditions.

Venμs is equipped with a multi-spectral camera that can capture important details, some of which are not visible to the human eye.

CNES is in charge of the multi-spectral instrument (camera), the image processing and the image distribution ground station. Elbit Electro-Optic Systems, Elop Ltd. developed the camera for CNES.

ISA is in charge of development and integration of the satellite, the platform, the monitoring and control center, and the electrical propulsion system. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) was the main integrator of the system, as well as developer of the platform and ground control system.

Vega receives its OPTSAT-3000 and Venµs payloads for Arianespace's August 1 mission

Vega's completion is highlighted in this photo series, beginning with encapsulation of the two satellite passengers – OPTSAT-3000 and Venµs – inside their protective payload fairing (photo at left). This component – called the "upper composite" – was then moved from the Spaceport's S3B facility to the SLV launch site on a special transporter (center), hoisted to the appropriate level of the mobile gantry, then integrated with the light-lift vehicle (right).

Build-up of the lightweight Vega for Arianespace's upcoming mission to orbit twin Earth observation satellites is complete in French Guiana, with the OPTSAT-3000 and Venµs spacecraft now integrated with their launch vehicle.
Спойлер
During activity on the Spaceport's SLV launch site, the two passengers – which are integrated in their payload fairing – were installed on Vega, topping off the vehicle composed of three solid-propellant stages and a liquid bipropellant upper stage.

Vega will now undergo final preparations and checkout leading to a nighttime liftoff on August 1 for Arianespace Flight VV10, marking the 10th mission for this vehicle since its 2012 service entry.
As the smallest member in Arianespace's launcher family, Vega complements the company's medium-lift Soyuz and heavyweight Ariane 5 in providing a full range of launch services for customers worldwide. ELV/Avio is the vehicle's production prime contractor.

OPTSAT-3000 to be deployed first by Vega
To be deployed first during the mission to Sun-synchronous orbit is OPTSAT-3000 – an Earth observation satellite for the Italian Ministry of Defense. Built by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) based on inter-governmental Italian-Israeli agreements, it will enable national defense entities to acquire and use high-resolution images from any part of the globe.

The OPTSAT-3000 system was supplied by Telespazio as prime contractor, which has responsibility for the entire system: from the satellite to the ground segment, launch and early operation services, the preparation and execution of operations and logistics, through to in-orbit tests and commissioning. OHB Italia is responsible for the launch services and related engineering support.

With a design life exceeding seven years, OPTSAT-3000 has a liftoff mass of 368 kg.

Venµs puts the focus on Earth vegetation
Riding in the lower payload position on Vega is Venµs, an Earth observation and exploratory mission for the Israeli Space Agency (ISA) and France's CNES space agency at the benefit of the Israeli Ministry of Science & Technology.

As the first Israeli-made satellite created for environmental research purposes, Venµs was developed by Israel Aerospace Industries' Space Division, with Rafael providing the propulsion system. The spacecraft has a liftoff mass set at 264 kg.

CNES is in charge of the multi-spectral camera, its image programming and processing, as well as the distributing ground station, with the camera's development performed for CNES by Elbit Electro-Optic Systems Elop Ltd.

Venµs – which is the acronym for "Vegetation and Environment on a New Micro Satellite" – will study the evolution of the Earth's vegetation during its scientific mission, while the satellite's technological mission will provide in-flight qualification of the Israeli Electrical Propulsion System, based on Hall-Effect thrusters.

Flight VV10 will be Arianespace's eighth mission of 2017. It follows the launches of four Ariane 5s, two Soyuz vehicles and one Vega so far this year.

At Kourou, French Guiana, preparations continue apace for the next flight of the Vega launcher, which will soon carry out its tenth mission, the second one of 2017. Vega has completed the integration phase, with the assembly of the P80 solid propellant first stage, the Zefiro 23 second stage, the Zefiro 9 third stage, the AVUM (Attitude and Vernier Upper Module) liquid propellant fourth stage, and the upper part containing the satellites. The propellant loading operations are currently underway.

The launch starts on 1 August at 10:58 p.m. local time, 3:58 a.m. on 2 August in Rome. Vega will place into orbit two Earth observation satellites: OPTSAT-3000 and VENµS. The two satellites will be positioned in the nose cone using the VESPA (Vega Secondary Payload Adaptor) device: OPTSAT in the upper part and VENµS in the lower part.

VENµS (Vegetation and Environment on a New Micro Satellite) is designed to provide detailed and constant monitoring of the vegetation on Earth's surface. Observing the growth of plants and their state of health, the satellite will help scientists to determine the impacts on Earth's surface of environmental factors, human activity, and climate change. The other Earth observation satellite, OPTSAT-3000, will enable national defence entities to acquire and use high-resolution images from any part of the globe.

Europe's Vega rocket stands ready for a nighttime liftoff from the edge of the Amazon jungle Tuesday night carrying a pair of satellites built in Israel for operation by the Italian defence ministry and a French-Israeli cooperation. Vega is targeting liftoff at 1:58:33 UTC on Wednesday and will be in action for 97 minutes to dispatch the two satellites into different orbits – taking advantage of the maneuverability of the rocket's AVUM upper stage.

Known as VV10 in Arianespace's numbering system of Vega missions, the flight will be the tenth for the smallest member in the company's launch vehicle fleet. It will be the eighth Arianespace-operated mission of the year, coming after four heavy-lift missions by Ariane 5, a pair of Soyuz launches to deliver satellites to Geostationary Transfer Orbit and Vega's VV09 mission that successfully delivered the Sentinel-2B satellite in March for the European Copernicus Program.

Hidden under Vega's payload fairing for Wednesday's mission are OPTSAT-3000, riding in the upper position affixed to a Vespa payload adapter, and VENµS that is riding in the lower passenger position for deployment after OPTSAT when the upper stage will have maneuvered into a higher orbit.

OPTSAT-3000 is a 368-Kilogram image-reconnaissance satellite built by Israel Aerospace Industries for operation by the Italian Ministry of Defence. The satellite was ordered in 2012 in an exchange deal contingent on Israel's purchase of Italian trainer aircraft. OPTSAT-3000 serves as a gapfiller for the Italian defence authorities until a next-generation space-based platform for the collection of optical reconnaissance will be available.

The 3.4-meter tall OPTSAT-3000 has a single instrument known as Jupiter, a powerful panchromatic and multi-band imaging system fed by a 70-centimeter telescope capable of collecting black and white imagery with a ground resolution of 0.5 meters and color images with a two-meter resolution which can be further improved through PAN-sharpening as both imaging branches can be operated simultaneously. Operating from a 450-Kilometer Sun Synchronous Orbit, OPTSAT-3000 will collect imagery across a 15-Kilometer wide swath, though the craft's agile pointing system allows imaging at off-nadir angles of up to 30 degrees and quick slew maneuvers can be used to capture multiple targets during a single pass.

The satellite in the lower passenger position on Wednesday's flight is VENµS, a 264-Kilogram dual-purpose satellite operated under a cooperation by the French and Israeli Space Agencies. VENµS – the Vegetation and Environment Monitoring New Micro-Satellite – had a long road to launch with the initial agreement between CNES and the Israeli Space Agency Signed in 2005. Under the project, Israel is responsible for manufacture of the satellite bus, the imaging instrument and the mission ground segment while France provides technical assistance, specifications for the instrument and the science ground segment that handles data processing, analysis and distribution.

VENµS, 1.7 meters tall and 1.2 meters in diameter, hosts a 25-centimeter aperture telescope feeding four detector assemblies holding a total of 12 line detectors for imaging in 12 spectral bands at a ground resolution of 5.3 meters. Superspectral imagery collected by the satellite will be used for ecosystem monitoring, capturing imagery of 50 sites that are representative of the world's inland and coastal ecosystems, providing information on vegetation cover and health and helping in the development for new automated extraction methods to turn satellite data into biosystem parameters. Data from the mission will also be useful for tracing the water and carbon cycles and further the current understand of the interface between land masses and the atmosphere.

2.5 years are budgeted for the VENµS imaging mission in an orbit of 720 Kilometers before the satellite will enter its second mission phase primarily dedicated to the demonstration of an Israeli Hall Effect Thruster for large orbit changes, orbital maintenance and drag-free flight. To that end, the satellite will employ an autonomous system that calculates the craft's power budget on an orbit-to-orbit basis to descend from 720 Kilometers into a 410-Kilometer Sun Synchronous Orbit over the course of around half a year, also modifying the orbital inclination to remain in a Sun Synch Orbit.

Once at 410 Kilometers, the satellite will operate the Xenon-fueled Hall Effect Thruster to counter drag and maintain altitude for one year, accumulating a large number of duty cycles and firing time on the thruster to qualify it for operational use on future projects. While at 410 Kilometers, the satellite will alternate between orbital maintenance and operating the super-spectral imager which will achieve a three-meter ground resolution from the lower orbit.

Vega's VV10 launch campaign began in May with the arrival of the launch vehicle components via one of two sea-going vessels tasked with shipping rocket parts from Europe to the South American launch base. Stacking of the three solid-fueled Vega stages was completed in the second half of June with the AVUM upper stage taking its spot atop the stack in early July.

The two passengers arrived on a Boeing 747 in late June to begin a multi-week preparations flow comprising final tests of the satellites, fueling for flight, and integration of the payload stack with VENµS hidden underneath the Vespa Adapter and the taller OPTSAT sitting atop the stack. Both passengers took their place on the Vega rocket by July 25 for a final set of testing activities leading into the Launch Readiness Review to clear the vehicle for its nighttime liftoff.

With an all-solid rocket and an upper stage carrying storable propellants, Vega will not require any dynamic operations such as propellant loading during its countdown. Countdown operations pick up at T-9 hours and 10 minutes and are largely focused on checks of the rocket's Multi-Function Unit that is in charge of controlling all aspects of the mission. Both payloads will be on internal power when Vega's automatic countdown sequence kicks off at T-4 minutes to put the rocket through final reconfigurations for liftoff.

Upon Ignition of its P80 first stage, Vega will literally jump off the ground – generating a total thrust of 280,000 Kilogram-force to lift the 137-metric-ton vehicle. Seconds after lifting off, Vega will pitch over to begin flying to the north, aiming for a Sun Synchronous Insertion.

The 11.2-meter long first stage will burn over 88 metric tons of solid propellant in just 115 seconds, accelerating the rocket to a speed of 1.7 Kilometers per second. Burnout on the first stage is sensed by the declining chamber pressure, triggering the pyrotechnic stage separation sequence at T+1:57 to set up for the ignition of the second stage, designated Zefiro-23.

The Z23, loaded with 24 metric tons of packed propellant, will soar to an average thrust of 122 metric-ton-force for a burn of 77 seconds.

Separation of the 8.4-meter second stage is expected at an altitude of 155 Kilometers at a speed of 3.8 Kilometers per second. Ignition of the Zefiro-9 stage comes around 23 seconds after Z23 separation at T+4:03. Although it is the smallest of the three stages, Z9 has the longest burn time – firing for 120 seconds at an average thrust of 23 metric-ton force.

The protective payload fairing will split open and separate four minutes and eight seconds into the flight when Vega will be well on its way out of the dense layers of the atmosphere.

>> Launch Profile (http://spaceflight101.com/vega-vv10/flight-profile/)

Stage 3 accelerates the vehicle to 7.6 Kilometers per second and separates six minutes and 42 seconds after launch when the vehicle will have reached 236 Kilometers in altitude. At that point, the AVUM – Attitude and Vernier Upper Module – assumes control of the flight, first tasked with stabilizing its orientation before coasting uphill for a little over a minute.

(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/153901.jpg) (http://spaceflight101.com/vega-vv10/wp-content/uploads/sites/171/2016/09/vv10-profile.jpg)
VV10 Flight Profile – Image: Arianespace

The AVUM will ignite its Main Engine Assembly (RD-869) at T+7 minutes and 52 seconds on a burn of just over six minutes to push the stack into orbit with a thrust of 250 Kilogram-force.

AVUM will be tasked with a relatively complex mission profile on Wednesday calling for a total of five burns the first of which is designed to inject the stack into a Parking Orbit peaking around 450 Kilometers in altitude. In that orbit, the vehicle will coast for half a lap around the planet before lighting up again 40 minutes and 37 seconds into the flight for an 85-second burn to circularize the orbit at 450 Kilometers.

OPTSAT-3000 will be first to depart the vehicle, separating 42 minutes and 49 seconds into the mission to set sail on its imaging mission for the Italian government. AVUM will drop the Vespa adapter ten minutes after OPTSAT separation and re-light the engine at T+53 minutes and 5 seconds on a 58-second burn to lift the high point of the orbit to 720 Kilometers. Then, it's another half orbit of coasting ahead of a 64-second circularization maneuver at T+95 minutes to set up the proper orbit for VENµS – targeting separation one hour and 37 minutes after liftoff to conclude the primary mission of Vega.

AVUM will be tasked with a 78-second retrograde deorbit maneuver ten minutes after dropping off its second passenger to remove itself from orbit, slowing by 217 meters per second to close out its mission with a fiery re-entry.

Vega is cleared for its August 1 liftoff with the OPTSAT-3000 and Venµs Earth observation satellites

The 10th Vega mission fr om French Guiana has been authorized for liftoff tomorrow following completion of its launch readiness review, which was conducted today at the Spaceport.

This assessment – held prior to each flight of an Arianespace launcher family member – confirmed that the lightweight vehicle and its multi-passenger payload are flight-ready, along with the Spaceport's infrastructure and the network of downrange tracking stations.

Tomorrow's mission is designated VV10 in Arianespace's numbering system, and it will be performed from the Spaceport's SLV launch site – wh ere the Vega was assembled and now stands in a flight-ready configuration, protected by a mobile gantry that will be withdrawn prior to liftoff.

Flight VV10 will mark Arianespace's eighth mission in 2017, and is the company's second this year using a Vega launcher – which is one of three launch vehicles operated by Arianespace at the Spaceport, along with the medium-lift Soyuz and heavyweight Ariane 5. Vega's production prime contractor is ELV, a company created by Avio and the Italian Space Agency.

A dual-passenger delivery for Vega
With today's readiness review completed, all is set for the August 1 nighttime liftoff – set for precisely 10:58:33 p.m. local time at the Spaceport in French Guiana. The flight to Sun-synchronous orbit will last approximately one hour and 42 minutes from liftoff to separation of its two passengers.

To be deployed first during the mission to Sun-synchronous orbit is OPTSAT-3000 – an Earth observation satellite for the Italian Ministry of Defence. Built by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) based on inter-governmental Italian-Israeli agreements, it will enable national defense entities to acquire and use high-resolution images from any part of the globe. The OPTSAT-3000 system was supplied by Telespazio as prime contractor, which has responsibility for the entire system; while OHB Italia is responsible for the launch services and related engineering support.

Riding in the lower payload position on Vega is Venµs, an Earth observation and exploratory mission for the Israel Space Agency (ISA) and France's CNES space agency at the benefit of the Israeli Ministry of Science & Technology. It was developed by Israel Aerospace Industries' Space Division, with Rafael providing the propulsion system.

A Vega rocket is counting down to launch from French Guiana at 0158:33 GMT Wednesday (9:58:33 p.m. EDT; 10:58:33 p.m. French Guiana time Tuesday) with pair of Earth-imaging satellites for the Italian military and a French-Israeli environmental monitoring project.
Спойлер
The 811-pound (368-kilogram) Optsat 3000 satellite, set to ride in the upper position in the Vega's payload fairing, will collect high-resolution optical imagery for the Italian military from an orbit 280 miles (450 kilometers) above Earth.

The 582-pound (264-kilogram) Venµs spacecraft, a joint mission managed by the Israel Space Agency and the French space agency CNES, will help scientists track the health and growth of global vegetation.
Both satellites were built by Israel Aerospace Industries.

The countdown is progressing as planned, with activations of the Vega rocket's power supply, on-board computer and navigation system coming in the next hour.

Meanwhile, ground teams are turning on the Optsat 3000 and Venµs satellites and confirming their readiness for tonight's ride into orbit.

The computer will be tested and loaded with the mission's flight software program at 2118 GMT (5:18 p.m. EDT), and the Vega's navigation unit will be aligned and verified functional 2128 GMT (5:28 p.m. EDT).

The launch team will receive a weather briefing before rollback of the Vega launch facility's mobile gantry. The launch pad's mobile service tower will be retracted to launch position at 2243 GMT (6:43 p.m. EDT), rolling on rails to a point 260 feet from the Vega rocket.

The launcher's navigation system will be tested again at 2333 GMT (7:33 p.m. EDT), and Vega's telemetry transmitters and transponders are activated again after the rollback of the launch pad gantry around 0043 GMT (8:43 p.m. EDT).

Engineers will verify the readiness Vega's systems at 0108 GMT (9:08 p.m. EDT), and a final pre-launch weather briefing is scheduled for 0148 GMT (9:48 p.m. EDT).

The synchronized launch sequence takes over the countdown about four minutes prior to liftoff. The computer-controlled final sequence checks thousands of parameters in the final steps of the countdown.

After liftoff, Vega will clear the pad's four lightning towers and pitch north from the Guiana Space Center, heading over the Atlantic Ocean and surpassing the speed of sound in about 30 seconds.

All systems are reported to be "go" for launch tonight in an instantaneous launch opportunity at 0158:33 GMT (9:58:33 p.m. EDT).

So far in the countdown, Vega's systems have been powered on and launch controllers have checked communications, tracking and command links between the rocket and ground facilities at the Guiana Space Center.
Спойлер
The launch pad's 16-story mobile gantry should now be retracted to its launch position about 260 feet (80 meters) fr om the rocket.

The 270-square-mile space center, run by the French space agency, CNES, and the European Space Agency, is located on the jungle coastline of French Guiana, situated on the northeast corner of South America.

The Vega launch pad, known by its French acronym ZLV, is about 1 kilometer southwest of the Ariane 5 launch complex. It was built on the former site of ELA-1, the home of Ariane 1, Ariane 2 and Ariane 3 launchers from 1979 until 1989.

Construction of the Vega launch pad began in 2004, including the building of a new 16-story mobile gantry weighing some 1,000 metric tons. A fixed umbilical mast standing 105 feet tall provides air conditioning to the Vega's payload.

Workers also added four lightning towers at the pad to protect the Vega rocket from thunderstorms.
Unlike the Ariane 5 rocket, the Vega's stages are stacked on the pad inside the mobile gantry, which provides protection of the launcher from weather at the spaceport.

Vega's countdown is managed from Guiana Space Center's prime control center less than a mile from the launch pad, the same building wh ere Ariane 5's countdown is controlled.

Perfect 10: the lightweight Vega orbits OPTSAT-3000 and Venµs on a milestone success

For the second time this year – and the 10th overall since entering service in 2012 – Vega has successfully launched a payload from the Spaceport, with this lightweight vehicle's latest mission delivering the OPTSAT-3000 and Venµs Earth observation satellites to Sun-synchronous orbits.

Lifting off from the Spaceport's SLV launch complex at precisely 10:58:33 p.m. French Guiana time on August 1, Vega lofted its multi-passenger payload during a flight sequence lasting 1 hour and 37 minutes.

Delivering OPTSAT-3000 for Italy
During the initial phase of the mission – designated Flight VV10 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – Vega was powered by its three solid propellant stages, which was followed by multiple burns of the bi-propellant upper stage, before separate deployments of the two spacecraft.

The first passenger released by Vega, OPTSAT-3000, is an Earth observation satellite for the Italian Ministry of Defence. It was built by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) based on inter-governmental Italian-Israeli agreements, and once operational, will enable national defense entities to acquire and use high-resolution imagery from any part of the globe.

The OPTSAT-3000 system was supplied by Telespazio as prime contractor, which has responsibility for the entire system; while OHB Italia was responsible for the launch services and related engineering support.

Venµs: an Israeli-French collaboration
The second passenger orbited on Flight VV10 – Venµs, also produced by Israel Aerospace Industries — is an Earth observation and exploratory mission for the Israel Space Agency (ISA) and France's CNES space agency at the benefit of Israel's Ministry of Science & Technology.

Venµs (an acronym for "Vegetation and Environment on a New Micro Satellite") will study the evolution of Earth's vegetation during its scientific mission, while the satellite's technological mission will provide in-flight qualification of the Israeli Electrical Propulsion System, based on Hall-Effect thrusters. CNES is in charge of the multi-spectral camera, its image programming and processing, as well as the distributing ground station; while the camera's development was performed for CNES by Elbit Electro-Optic Systems Elop Ltd.

An eye on the future
In addition to bringing Vega's tally of successes to double-digits, Flight VV10 also marked its first launch under a new operational organization between Arianespace and the vehicle's production prime contractor, Avio.

Under the new arrangement aimed at enhancing competitiveness, Avio now assumes responsibility for preparing the launcher until liftoff; while Arianespace maintains full responsibility for customer relations, as well as operations for the final countdown and launch decision.

Reinforcing Arianespace's continued focus on innovation, Flight VV10's Vega also utilized a new "out of autoclave" payload fairing that was developed by RUAG for the next-generation Vega C launcher.

Flight VV10 continues Arianespace's busy schedule in 2017, in which eight launches were performed during the year's first seven months (two with the lightweight Vega; two with the medium-lift Soyuz; and four using the heavy-lift Ariane 5).

The company's next mission is scheduled for August 31, when Ariane 5 will lift off from French Guiana to geostationary transfer orbit with a pair of relay satellites: Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a.

Flight VV10: For its 10th successful launch in a row, Vega orbits two Earth observation satellites – OPTSAT-3000 and Venµs for Italy, Israel and France

Arianespace has successfully launched two Earth observation satellites for civil and military applications: OPTSAT-3000 for the Italian Ministry of Defence; and Venµs, a mission of the Israel Space Agency (ISA) – a government body sponsored by the country's Ministry of Science & Technology – and the French CNES space agency (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales).

The launch took place on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at 10:58:33 pm (local time in Kourou) from the Guiana Space Center (CSG), Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana.
Спойлер
This was Arianespace's eighth mission of the year and the second using Vega in 2017. It marked the 10th successful Vega launch in a row since this light-lift vehicle started its career at the Guiana Space Center in 2012. Additionally, today's mission reaffirmed Vega's excellence and versatility.

Vega goes 10 for 10 as Arianespace's light-lift launcher; Vega C is in the starting blocks
As a highly versatile launcher, Vega has now logged 10 launches, all successful, since starting operation in 2012 at the Guiana Space Center. Over the past five years of launch activity, Vega has orbited a total of 25 satellites for 19 customers, both government and commercial.

In June 2017, Arianespace announced the first two contracts for the Vega C launcher. Scheduled to make its first flight in 2019, Vega C will offer higher performance than the current version in terms of payload weight and usable volume. It will be able to handle an even wider range of missions (from nanosatellites to large optical and radar observation satellites), and will further enhance the launch service competitiveness.

Vega and Vega C now have an order book totaling nine launches, with one-third of them for European governments and two-thirds for commercial customers in export markets.

This mission also marks Arianespace's continued focus on innovation, heralding the new payload fairings to be used on its upcoming Ariane 6 and Vega C launchers. As with the most recent Ariane 5 mission (on June 28, 2017), the new "out of autoclave" fairing, built by RUAG, protected the satellite passengers on Flight VV10.

On this VV10 mission, Arianespace also anticipated the evolution for how Vega launch campaigns are carried out, based on the framework agreement defining the operational organization for Ariane 6 and Vega C, which was approved by ESA, CNES, ArianeGroup and Avio. Industrial prime contractor Avio now assumes responsibility for preparing the launcher until its liftoff (H0), while Arianespace maintains full responsibility for customer relations, as well as operations for the final countdown and the launch decision. This new operational organization is to allow more integrated operation of teams at the Guiana Space Center for enhanced competitiveness.
Vega at a glance

  • First launched in 2012, from CSG
  • 25 satellites launched to date: 12 for Earth observation,11 for technology applications and 2 for science missions
  • Launches performed for 19 customers from around the world (Europe, North and South America, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa)
  • All 10 missions successful, including seven at the service of Earth observation
  • 9,836 kg. cumulated payload weight sent into orbit
  • Seven Vega launches in the order book, along with two Vega C launches.

Two Earth observation satellites for Italy, Israel and France
OPTSAT-3000 is the fourth satellite launched by Arianespace for the Italian Ministry of Defence since 2001. This Earth observation satellite will enable the acquisition and use of high-resolution images from any part of the globe. The OPTSAT-3000 system will be interoperable with Italy's second-generation COSMO-SkyMed radar satellites. This will give the Italian Ministry of Defence access to state-of-the-art technologies, and ensure maximum operational capabilities with the combined optical and radar data offered by these two systems.

Telespazio is responsible for the entire system, with OHB Italia in charge of launch services and related engineering support.

Venµs is an Earth and vegetation observation and exploratory mission, designed to monitor the effects of climate change. This mission is part of a joint space program between the Israel Space Agency (ISA), a government body sponsored by the country's Ministry of Science and Technology, and the French CNES space agency (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales).

In fact, the full name of the satellite summarizes its mission: "Vegetation and Environment monitoring on a New MicroSatellite." By analyzing and comparing images of the same area at different times, researchers can evaluate soil conditions, understand the development of vegetation, and detect the outbreak of a disease or the contamination of a field.
Arianespace: launch services well-suited to Earth observation systems
    [/li]
  • The two satellites for this mission are the 62nd and 63rd Earth observation satellites launched by Arianespace's Ariane, Soyuz and Vega launchers.
  • 10% of the satellites launched by Arianespace – and 25% of the launches in its order book –involve Earth observation
Arianespace is a key player at the service of European institutions (both agencies and governments) for their Earth observation and meteorology programs.
Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd (IAI) built both OPTSAT-3000 and Venµs, which are the third and fourth satellites from this manufacturer to be launched by Arianespace, following Amos 1 (in May 1996) and Amos 2 (in December 2003, via Arianespace's Starsem affiliate). IAI is the largest aerospace and defense company in Israel.

Shortly after the announcement of the orbital injection of these two satellites, Arianespace Chief Executive Officer Stéphane Israël said: "With this second Vega launch of 2017, and its 10th success in a row since being introduced at the Guiana Space Center, Arianespace is very proud to support two major Earth observation programs for Italy, Israel and France. We are very honored by this mark of trust from the Italian Ministry of Defence for which this launch – via our direct customer OHB Italia and on behalf of Telespazio – marks the fourth by Arianespace since 2001. Concerning Venµs, thanks go to the Israel's Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), which entrusted us with this symbolic mission at the service of the environment, conducted by the Israel Space Agency (ASI) and the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES). Equally, 'bravo' to Israel Aerospace Industries, which built both satellites: OPTSAT-3000 and Venµs.

"My congratulations also go to our industrial prime contractor Avio, for Vega's excellence and availability. And of course, my thanks to the European Space Agency and national agencies, especially the Italian Space Agency, for supporting the Vega program. Thanks as well to CNES/CSG, along with the companies and all staff at the launch base, who continue to support us as we go from success to success. Lastly, 'bravo' to everyone at Arianespace for this eighth successful launch of the year, and the 265th by the family of Arianespace launchers at CSG."
The OPTSAT-3000 passenger is a very-high-resolution optical Earth observation satellite that will provide daytime images of the entire planet. It was placed into Sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of about 450 km. With a mass of 368 kg. at launch, OPTSAT-3000 offers a design life of 7 years.
The Venµs payload is a high-resolution, high-frequency Earth observation satellite, which will produce high spatial and temporal resolution images. It is equipped with a camera built by Elbit Electro-Optic Systems Elop Ltd for CNES. The satellite was placed into a Sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of about 720 km. It weighed 264 kg. at launch and offers a design life of 4.5 years.
Both OPTSAT-3000 and Venµs were built by Israel Aerospace Industries in Tel Aviv, Israel, using an IMPS Bus platform.

Vega: tenth consecutive successful mission
(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/223513.jpg)

Kourou (French Guiana), 2 August 2017 – The European space launcher Vega has successfully concluded its tenth mission, the second of 2017, by correctly placing into orbit OPSAT-300 and Venus, two Earth observation satellites. This event consolidates Vega's excellent reliability in the sector of space launchers; in fact, it is the first time that a new launcher has performed its first 10 debut launches without any anomalies.

Liftoff from the Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana took place on 1 August at 22:58 local time (03:58 on 2 August in Italy). This is the fourth launch in the last 10 months, a clear demonstration of the Vega launcher's reliability and flexibility.

"10 missions, 10 successes: Vega has achieved a level of performance and reliability that is unmatched," remarked Giulio Ranzo, CEO of Avio. "We are proud of this result, the first achieved by Vega following the Stock Exchange listing, which attests not only to the great reliability of our products but also to the effectiveness of our collaboration with Arianespace and with our European industrial partners".

"We have been successful in our efforts to develop new technologies and increasingly performant launchers to satisfy the increasingly sophisticated needs of our customers," Ranzo added. "In Colleferro (Rome) we have just completed the first booster case for the P120, the largest monolithic solid-propellant motor made entirely of carbon fibre that will equip Vega C and Ariane 6, the new European launchers that will fly in 2019 and 2020″.

"The successes achieved by the Vega launcher are driven by the capacity to innovate, do research and identify competitive and reliable solutions for the launcher market", Roberto Battiston said, President of the Italian Space Agency. "Satellite infrastructures are growing and will be increasingly pervasive: it has been paramount to develop a family of European launchers able to ensure access to space and the competitiveness of the whole space value chain. In this context, Avio's role and capabilities represent a certainty",  Battiston concluded.

"We are very proud to share this tenth consecutive success of the light-weight vehicle Vega from the Guiana Space Center alongside our industrial prime contractor Avio" said Stéphane Israël, CEO of Arianespace. "Our partnership is key to the success of Vega, which, launch after launch, stands as the benchmark launcher of its class and whose excellence and versatility allow us to offer our customers increasingly competitive launch solutions."

OPSAT-3000 is an Italian-Israeli satellite for Earth observation resulting from the cooperation between Telespazio and IAI (Israel Aerospace Industries). Venus is a French-Israeli satellite for Earth observation based on a cooperative venture between CNES (the French Space Agency) and ISA (the Israel Space Agency).

Both satellites, precisely placed into orbit by Vega, will transmit data and images for the Earth observation and the assessment of the impacts of climate change on vegetation.

Vega

Vega is a European launcher that was designed, developed and built in Italy by Avio, through its subsidiary ELV (30% owned by ASI, the Italian Space Agency). It belongs to a new generation of vehicles designed to transfer satellites into low Earth orbit (between 300 and 1,500 km from Earth) for institutional and scientific purposes, in order to observe the Earth and monitor the environment. 65% of the funding for Vega came from Italy and it was built in the Avio production plant in Colleferro, near Rome. It complements the family of European launchers and it is capable of placing into orbit satellites with masses of up to 2,000 kg.

 August 2, 2017 (http://spaceflight101.com/vega-vv10/vega-vv10-launch-success-with-two-satellites/)

The tenth Vega rocket blasted off fr om French Guiana Tuesday night, lighting up the edge of the Amazon before swinging to the north to dispatch a pair of Israeli-built satellites into two different orbits via a complex multi-burn mission by the launcher's upper stage.

The 30-meter tall Vega leapt off its launch pad at precisely 1:58:33 UTC on Wednesday, riding on pillars of fire and smoke as it shot up under the power of its massive solid-fueled first stage. Aiming for a polar orbit, Vega turned straight north and fired its three solid-fueled stages in close succession before handing off to the AVUM upper stage that first fired for six minutes to reach a preliminary orbit to begin a deliberate orbital ballet to dispatch its payloads – requiring a total of five firings of AVUM's main engine.

Hauling a total payload mass of 990 Kilograms, AVUM re-started after coasting for a third of an orbit to inject the first passenger into a 450-Kilometer orbit. OPTSAT-3000 was sent on its way 42 minutes into the flight, starting a mission operated by the Italian Defence Ministry to collect high-resolution reconnaissance imagery.

With the first satellite on its way, AVUM shed the Vespa adapter to reveal the second passenger of this mission, the French-Israeli VENµS that required AVUM to make two more firings to reach the craft's desired 720-Kilometer orbit for separation 97 minutes after liftoff. AVUM was then to re-light a fifth time to remove itself from orbit.

Wednesday's mission was the tenth flight of the Vega rocket since its inauguration in 2012 as the light-lifter in Arianespace's line of launch vehicles that also includes the 'Europeanized' version of the Russian Soyuz to tackle medium-lift missions while the Ariane 5 workhorse handles the heavy-lifting. It was the eighth Arianespace mission in 2017 – two Vegas, two Soyuz flights to Geostationary Transfer Orbit and four dual-payload deliveries by Ariane 5.

Wednesday's flight, in a sense, was an Ariane-like delivery for Vega – featuring a stack of two satellites with a larger passenger riding in the upper slot and the smaller of the two in the lower berth underneath an adapter. The 368kg OPTSAT-3000 took the upper position on Wednesday, standing 3.35 meters tall, while the 264kg VENµS was only revealed after OPTSAT departed the vehicle when the top portion of the Vespa adapter separated.

OPTSAT-3000 was ordered by the Italian Ministry of Defence in a deal contingent on Israel's purchase of Italian training aircraft. The satellite was manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries based on the export version of its OPSAT-3000 satellite platform, coupled with a high-resolution imaging payload known as Jupiter that features a 70-centimeter telescope and panchromatic & multi-band detector units.

Black-and-white imagery delivered by the satellite will have a ground resolution of 0.5 meters while color imagery will reach a resolution of two meters and even better with PAN-sharpening possible because Jupiter can capture panchromatic and multi-band imagery at the same time, covering a ground swath of 15 Kilometers.

The $182 million OPTSAT-3000 has a span of 4.6 meters once its two solar arrays are deployed and the craft is outfitted with an agile pointing system that permits the satellite to capture images at off-nadir angles up to 30 degrees and quickly slew from one target to the next, allowing several ground sites to be imaged with a single pass.

The smaller of the two satellites, VENµS, sets out on a two-part mission starting with a two-and-a-half-year science mission using a Super-Spectral Imager followed by a technology demonstration mission involving a Hall Effect Thruster for a major orbit change and drag-free flight exercise.

VENµS had a long road to the launch pad and is the result of a collaboration between the French and Israeli Space Agencies with the Israeli side tasked with the manufacture of the satellite & its instruments as well as the mission control-related ground segment while the French side contributed technical assistance and will handle the science-related part of the mission.

The VENµS Super Spectral Camera (VSSC) captures images in 12 spectral bands, featuring a 25-centimeter telescope feeding four focal plane assemblies that host a dozen line detectors to collect imagery across a 27.5-Kilometer ground swath at a ground resolution of 5 meters.

The second part of the VENµS mission will be focused on IHET, the Israeli Hall Effect Thruster – a 15-millinewton ion thruster developed by Israeli company Rafael for use on satellites requiring frequent orbital changes or drag compensation. Two IHET units are installed on VENµS and will be used to reduce the craft's orbit from 720 to 410 Kilometers over the course of around half a year followed by one year of drag compensation at the lower altitude to accumulate well over 1,000 operating hours on the thrusters. VSSC will be able to deliver an image resolution of three meters, continuing limited imaging operations once the satellite enters the lower Sun Synchronous Orbit.

Vega's nighttime liftoff was preceded by a nine-hour long countdown operation that ran very smoothly, in large part due to Vega's overall design philosophy opting for a simple solid-fueled launch vehicle – avoiding overly complex systems to establish a low-cost system for launching commercial and government satellites into Low Earth Orbit. Simplicity is achieved by using a stack of three solid-fueled stages topped by a liquid-fueled Attitude and Vernier Module which gives the vehicle precise injection and multi-orbit mission capability.

Overall, the Vega launcher stands 29.9 meters tall and weighs 137,000 Kilograms at liftoff, not using any large liquid-fueled stages which eliminates any dynamic operations such as propellant loading from the rocket's countdown.

Checkouts of the rocket's Multi Function Unit came up clean and weather was predicted to be favorable, allowing teams to roll back the Mobile Service Gantry three hours before the instantaneous launch opportunity. Vega finished pre-launch checks and was placed in its launch configuration at T-50 minutes to prepare for the Automated Countdown Sequence picking up at T-4 minutes to put in motion the final preparatory steps for liftoff – notably the transfer to internal power, the final check of the guidance system and the handover of control to the rocket's computers.

Ignition of the P80 first stage marked the point of no return for Vega, catapulting itself off the launch pad with a thrust of 280 metric-ton-force, creating a thrust to weight ratio in excess of two and making for a fast departure. Vega lit up the night skies over the Guiana Space Center, ascending vertically for a handful of seconds before pitching and rolling onto a departure course to the north, heading out over the Atlantic to reach a high-inclination orbit for the delivery of its payloads.

Burning 820 Kilograms of solid propellant every second, P80 accelerated Vega beyond the speed of sound within half a minute, cutting through the dense layers of the atmosphere. Thrust on the P80 began tailing off one minute and 50 seconds into the flight, having consumed 88 metric tons of propellant to accelerate the vehicle to a speed of 1.7 Kilometers per second.

The 11.2-meter long first stage dropped away one minute and 56 seconds after liftoff at an altitude of 59 Kilometers and the 122 metric-ton-force Zefiro-23 second stage immediately fired up on its 77-second burn to continue boosting the vehicle out of the atmosphere. Burning through 24 metric tons of propellant, the 8.4-meter long Z23 accelerated Vega to a speed of 3.8 Kilometers per second, separating from the vehicle three minutes and 40 seconds after liftoff when Vega had reached an altitude of over 200 Kilometers.

The two lower stages exhibited a slight overperformance which was corrected via energy management on the third stage and trajectory adjustments by the AVUM upper stage that was able to shorten its first burn by several seconds as a result.

The third stage, designated Zefiro-9, ignited after a short delay, four minutes and three seconds into the flight followed just five seconds later by the separation of the protective payload fairing. This was Vega's first flight with a fairing using out-of-autoclave carbon composite technology which was recently inaugurated on the Ariane 5, permitting a significant reduction in production time and cost for the fairing halves.

Generating a peak thrust of 32 metric ton-force, the third stage fired for two minutes and raised Vega's speed to nearly match orbital velocity. Burnout on the 4.1-meter third stage was followed by a brief passive coast to ensure any residual thrust had tailed off before shedding the spent stage. At separation, six minutes and 42 seconds into the flight, Vega had reached an altitude of 235 Kilometers, traveling nearly 7.6 Kilometers per second.

(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/153919.jpg) (http://spaceflight101.com/vega-vv10/wp-content/uploads/sites/171/2017/08/vv10-liftoff8.jpg)
Image: Arianespace

Taking over control of the flight, AVUM was first tasked with lifting the stack into orbit – starting out with a stabilization of its orientation and a propellant settling maneuver before lighting up the 250 Kilogram-force Main Engine Assembly (RD-869). The burn ran just over six minutes and corrected for injection errors by the lower stages, parking the stack in a slightly elliptical orbit peaking at 455 Kilometers in altitude.

AVUM then coasted for 26.5 minutes to climb towards the high point of the orbit for a one-minute and 25-second burn of the MEA to inject the stack into a circular orbit at 450 Kilometers, inclined 97 degrees. This set the stage for the spring-loaded separation of the OPTSAT-3000 satellite just shy of T+43 minutes, heading off on a mission of at least six years filling a reconnaissance data gap for the Italian defence authorities.

(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/153913.jpg) (http://spaceflight101.com/vega-vv10/wp-content/uploads/sites/171/2017/08/vv10-liftoff12.jpg)
Image: Arianespace Webcast

With the first payload on its way, AVUM conducted a re-orientation before jettisoning the Vespa adapter 52 minutes after launch to reveal the VENµS satellite which planned to start out in a higher orbit than OPTSAT – requiring another pair of engine burns by AVUM. The upper stage re-lit 53 minutes after launch and fired for just under one minute to lift the high point of the orbit to 720 Kilometers ahead of half a lap of coasting to set up for the circularization – a 64-second burn completed one hour and 35 minutes into the mission.

VENµS sailed off one hour and 37 minutes into the flight, entering its planned orbit at 720 Kilometers wh ere it will spend close to three years – first going through commissioning and orbital fine-tuning as prerequisites for the 2.5-year science mission with the super spectral camera. The mission will then make its 310-Kilometer altitude reduction and continue in a drag compensation mode before the craft is brought to a purposeful re-entry.

For AVUM, the day was not over once both satellites were on their way as one more burn was left for the upper stage to remove itself from orbit – targeting a retrograde deorbit burn of 78 seconds ten minutes after VENµS separation.

Wednesday's launch marked Vega's tenth successful orbital delivery and will be followed by one more Vega mission later this year with an Earth observation satellite operated by Morocco. For Arianespace, the next mission on the manifest is an Ariane 5, currently targeting liftoff on September 1st with the Intelsat 37e and BSat-4 communications satellites headed to Geostationary Transfer Orbit.

August 2, 2017 (https://spaceflightnow.com/2017/08/) Stephen Clark (https://spaceflightnow.com/author/stephen-clark/)

Firing off a launch pad on the fringes of the Amazon rainforest, a European Vega rocket climbed into space Tuesday night and deployed a new optical surveillance craft for the Italian military and a French-Israeli environmental satellite to monitor vegetation, snow cover and coastal waterways.

The Optsat 3000 and Venµs satellites lifted off at 0158:33 GMT Wednesday (9:58:33 p.m. EDT; 10:58:33 p.m. French Guiana time Tuesday) on the 10th flight of a Vega rocket, a four-stage booster primarily developed and manufactured in Italy.

The two satellites, both manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries, were paired together to share the Vega rocket launch by Arianespace, the French company charged with managing commercial missions from the Guiana Space Center, a remote outpost on the northeastern shore of South America.

Roaring into the late night sky with nearly 700,000 pounds of thrust, the 98-foot-tall (30-meter) Vega launcher turned north from French Guiana and soared over the Atlantic Ocean, Bermuda and Canada as its three solid-fueled rocket motors fired in quick succession in the first seven minutes of the mission.

A fourth stage engine burning liquid hydrazine fuel ignited four times, first to place the Optsat 3000 satellite into a planned 280-mile-high (450-kilometer) polar orbit tilted 97 degrees to the equator. The 811-pound (368-kilogram) spacecraft, destined for use by the Italian military, separated from the Vega rocket's upper stage around 43 minutes after liftoff.

The second pair of upper stage engine firings aimed to maneuver the rocket into a higher 447-mile-high (720-kilometer) orbit with an inclination of 98 degrees for the deployment of Venµs, a scientific research satellite jointly developed by the French and Israeli space agencies.

Launch controllers announced the Venµs satellite released from the Vega rocket more than an hour-and-a-half into the mission, and Arianespace said both payloads were placed into accurate orbits.

"Arianespce is delighted to confirm that Optsat 3000 and Venµs have been safely separated in their targeted sun-synchronous orbits," said Stephane Israel, chairman and CEO of Arianespace. "For the second time this year, and the 10th since its debut, success is here for Vega and its customers."

Optsat 3000 and Venµs were expected to fly over an Israeli ground station around five hours after the launch, giving engineers an opportunity to verify both satellites are healthy following their trip into space. The first images from each satellite should be downlinked to the ground within a week or so, officials said.

In work since 2005, the Venµs mission is a 50-50 collaboration between Israel and France.

The 582-pound (264-kilogram) spacecraft carries a French-supplied "super-spectral" color camera sensitive in 12 bands ranging from blue to near-infrared. Venµs will take pictures of vegetation, glaciers, coastlines and other features from its high orbital perch.

"Venµs ... will play a major role in the fight against climate change," said Jean-Yves Le Gall, president of CNES, the French space agency.

Offering a twist on a line often repeated by French President Emmanuel Macron, Le Gall said: "Venµs will help make our planet great again."

Scientists will point Venµs's camera toward 110 areas of interest in forests, croplands and nature reserves around the world, according to CNES. No other satellite currently in orbit can survey the same locations with the resolution and frequency of the Venµs mission, a benefit gained at the expense of global coverage, officials said.

The United States has 24 percent of the Venµs mission's targets, more than any other nation.

Researchers will track plant growth, snow cover, glacial movements, and sediments in coastal estuaries with the Venµs satellite. Scientists will analyze the mission's data output to study how environmental and human factors influence vegetation health.

"Venµs will be used to model the influence of human activities or environmental factors, global warming, on the surface reflectances," said Pierric Ferrier, Venµs project manager at CNES. "The idea is to be able to build models to study the evolution and prevent the effect of global warming and allow sustainable development."

"The hydric stress of vegetation can be observed in some of the spectral bands of Venµs, then you will be able to monitor exactly the need of water for your plants, and in the infrared domain also you can monitor the presence of water in the soil or not," he said.

"Each type of plant has its own spectral signature. We are able to segregate and isolate some of the crops we want to observe, and we can combine some spectral bands and get the spectral signature of each crop."

Officials from the Israel Space Agency and CNES said each nation contributed approximately $40 million to the Venµs mission. Adding price of the launch, the mission's total cost exceeds $100 million.

"What is really unique in Venµs is the convergence of three things," said Pierric Ferrier, the Venµs project manager at CNES. "The good resolution of 5 meters (16 feet), the spectral richness of the camera in 12 bands, and the third is revisit — two days."

"Existing Earth observation satellites observe pre-defined zones of interest every 10 to 15 days," Ferrier told Spaceflight Now in a phone interview. "At this frequency, you cannot observe quickly for phenomena such as plant growth, variation of snow cover, and various types of phenomena which need constant, frequent observation. So Venµs will be able to distinguish between two images taken at two-day intervals, and see what has evolved quickly between the two images."

A software algorithm developed for the Venµs mission will help scientists remove clouds and aerosols from the satellite's imagery, revealing minute changes on the surface.

Besides the satellite's primary camera, France is in charge of the mission's science data center and other ground systems. Israeli engineers built the satellite, the camera's telescope and a experimental plasma thruster to be tested in the second phase of the Venµs mission.

IAI built a nanosatellite that launched in February that is making experimental weather observations, but Opher Doron, head of IAI's space division, said Venµs is "the first serious research satellite Israel has done."

Officials from the Israel Space Agency and CNES said each nation contributed approximately $40 million to the Venµs mission. Adjusting for the price of the launch, the mission's total cost hovers near $100 million.

"It's a very nicely run program between the two space agences, and we hope for many more," Doron said in an interview with Spaceflight Now.

After a two-and-a-half-year Earth observation campaign, Venµs's altitude will be lowered to approximately 250 miles (410 kilometers) to test the low-power electric thruster's ability to counteract the effect of atmospheric drag and maintain the satellite's orbit.

Developed by Rafael, an Israeli defense contractor, the Hall effect thruster design could be used on future Israeli-built reconnaissance satellites.

"It's a very exciting new capability that we plan to migrate on to other satellites to give us longer life and lower altitudes," Doron said. "This is designed to give us a flight-proven capability."

Venµs's launch was delayed several years, and Ferrier said the schedule slips were primarily caused by problems obtaining filters for the satellite's camera from Materion Barr, a Massachusetts-based company. The filters were restricted under the U.S. government's ITAR arms control laws until the hardware was finally delivered for Venµs, delaying the launch approximately 18 months, Ferrier said.

Problems arranging the satellite's launch triggered another delay, he said, until mission managers could find another spacecraft heading to a similar polar orbit that would be ready for liftoff at the same time as Venµs.

The co-passenger ended up being Optsat 3000, another Israeli-made satellite.

Optsat 3000 is Italy's first optical surveillance satellite, joining a fleet of Italian radar imaging craft already in orbit. The $182 million satellite, designed for a lifetime of at least seven years, carries a Jupiter remote sensing camera provided by Israel-based Elbit Systems Ltd. capable of resolving objects on the ground smaller than a half-meter (20 inches).

"Today, we set the pace for better cooperation in defense," said Gen. Enzo Vecciarelli, Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force. "That's something we really need right now."

"Optsat is our very high-end electro-optical satellite," Doron said in an interview with Spaceflight Now. "It's going to be flying at 450 kilometers. It's got superb resolution at that altitude."

Optsat 3000's imaging strength, enabled in part by its relatively low-altitude orbit, apparently bests the resolution offered by spy satellites owned by other European governments, and matches the world's best commercial Earth observation spacecraft.

"I think it's probably one of the more advanced satellites around," Doron said.

Without disclosing the exact resolution of Optsat 3000's images, Doron said it will offer "WorldView-class" image sharpness from its operating orbit. DigitalGlobe's newest WorldView satellites have cameras capable to resolving features as small as 31 centimeters, or 12 inches, on the ground.

"The generic Optsats offer 50 centimeters (resolution) from 600 kilometers, although this one will be better because it's lower, so it's super-high resolution," Doron said. "This satellite is also optimized to cover very large areas. It's very agile, so it can cover lots of targets in many areas using different scanning modes and different scanning directions."

Doron described Optsat 3000 as a "tool designed for practical intelligence users."

Arianespace's next launch is set for Sept. 1, when a heavy-lift Ariane 5 rocket will send two commercial communications satellites to orbit for Intelsat and Japan's Broadcasting Satellite System Corp., or B-SAT.

The next flight by a Vega rocket is scheduled for no earlier than Nov. 7 with a military reconnaissance satellite for the government of Morocco.

The Italian Ministry of Defence's OPTSAT-3000 satellite has been successfully launched at 1.58 UTC. The launch has been performed by Arianespace (http://www.arianespace.com) from the Kourou European spaceport in the French Guyana, with a VEGA European launcher, produced by AVIO (http://www.avio.com). The satellite separated from the upper stage of the launcher 42 minutes after the launch, and the first telemetry signal has been acquired approximately 5 hours after.

The whole system is supplied by Leonardo (http://www.leonardocompany.com) through Telespazio. As prime contractor, Telespazio leads an international group of companies including, among others, Israel Aerospace Industries (http://www.iai.co.il/) (IAI), which built the satellite within an international co-operation agreement between Italy and Israel as well as OHB Italia (http://www.ohb-italia.it), responsible for the launch services.

Alessandro Profumo, CEO of Leonardo, commented: "With the launch of OPTSAT-3000, Italy has acquired an asset capable of significantly improving the country's defence and protection capabilities. We are proud to have contributed to the achievement of this important target, bringing to bear our outstanding capabilities and technologies in a leadership role on a strategic national security programme. With OPTSAT-3000, Leonardo continues to be a major player in international space projects".

OPTSAT-3000 consists of a satellite in a sun-synchronous LEO (Low Earth Orbit) orbit and of a Ground Segment for in-orbit control and for data acquisition and processing. OPTSAT-3000 will provide high-resolution images of any part of the globe, providing Italy with an autonomous national capability of Earth observation from space with a high-resolution optical sensor.

After the successful launch, system check and test activities have now started; the system will then be entirely managed by the Italian ground segment, located over three operation centres: the Joint Satellite Remote Survey Centre (CITS – Centro Interforze di Telerilevamento Satellitare) in Pratica di Mare (Roma), the SICRAL Joint Management and Control Centre (CIGC - Centro Interforze di Gestione e Controllo) in Vigna di Valle (Rome) and the Fucino Space Centre (L'Aquila) (http://www.telespazio.com/about-us-chi-siamo/our-company/space-centres/fucino) of Telespazio.

OPTSAT-3000 will jointly operate with the second-generation COSMO-SkyMed (http://www.telespazio.com/programmes-programmi/cosmo-skymed) system of radar satellites – which has also been developed by Italian industry, with Leonardo and its joint ventures, Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio – integrating optical and radar data to provide the Italian Ministry of Defence with information characterised by extreme accuracy, resolution and completeness and with state-of-the-art analysis and operational tools.
